A pre-stand down potpourri

First, I want to thank Lt. Derwin Proby for the outstanding job he did as team captain of Navy Region Northwest’s flag football team. His team shutout the Army team fielded by Ft. Lewis Soldiers, 17-0, at Cowan Field.

Let me also thank every Sailor who traveled to Bangor to practice and then to Fort Lewis to play. Your professionalism and superior sportsmanship are notable: you did a great job on the field and brought great credit to the Region and the Navy. Bravo Zulu!

Secondly, I had the opportunity this week to present the Medial of Honor flag to retired Navy Capt. Richard McCool. Now a Bainbridge Island resident, then Lt. McCool received the Medal of Honor for his actions in a sea battle during the end World War II.

His sacrifice and bravery bring to mind the service and sacrifice of Sailors today. I want to urge you not to forget the Sailors on duty, even on ships here in homeport, let alone those at sea or otherwise deployed. Keeping them in mind is particularly crucial during the holidays. Send an e-mail or a letter to a deployed shipmate. Say ìthank youî to the Sailor standing watch on liberty days and days of holiday routine.

Equally important, remember family: Include family members of deployed folks in your holiday plans; donít leave them alone during a time of year that is supposed to be full of great joy.

Third, please don’t forget the community outside the gates. There are countless first responders and other service folks who tackle their duties throughout the holidays.

Take the time to thank them and acknowledge what they do for us.

Speaking of community, consider reaching out this year to a shelter, soup kitchen, or church and lending a hand, or perhaps donating food or warm clothing.

Finally, speaking of warm clothing brings to mind last week’s snow, ice, fog and bitter cold. Winter is here to stay: Please be safe as you drive. Make sure you have all-weather (if not snow) tires with ample tread. Carry snow chains if you plan on traveling through mountain passes.

A flashlight, blankets, first aid kits, brush and ice scraper are essentials for your trunk this time of year. Keep your eye on the weather, plan ahead, and adjust your driving habits to the weather conditions. And, no matter the weather conditions, please don’t drink and drive.

Take care and be safe.
