Message: Here's a great article I found at www.northwestnavigator.com: -- Service members and coffee lovers at Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor participated in a donation April 11 of more than 100 pounds of coffee for troops serving in Iraq. Throughout the month of April, coffee will be collected, packaged then sent off to Iraq by the end of the month. “We are doing this project to thank them for protecting our nation,” said Armando Ruiz, Bangor Starbucks donations sponsor. The theme of the project is titled “Letting our troops know we care, one cup at a time.” Every customer can purchase a pound of coffee and personalize it with a special note to military personnel as a way to send a simple thank you. After patrons purchase a bag, consumers can sign a special decorated banner which will also be shipped with the boxes of coffee. “Right now, we are at 75 percent of our goal and we hope to reach more than 200 pounds of coffee,” said Ruiz. “It’s important to show service members how much the people out here care about them.” For Missile Technician 2nd Class Scott Helms, of USS Louisiana (SSBN 743) (Gold), the project was a way to boost morale. “I think donation drives like these are awesome because they make a difference to those who are serving in Iraq,” said Helms. “It’s great to see the community get together to give service members something to smile about.” “The coffee gives service members out there something to look forward to and I am sure the troops will appreciate it,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Benjamin Bate, Transient Personnel Unit (TPU). Not only are customers participating, but local baristas have donated their own bags of coffee. “Each week, I get a free pound of coffee to take home for working here and I donate my coffee to the troops,” said Marcella Mangiola, barista. “This is just a small way to say thanks and we appreciate all they do our country.” http://www.northwestnavigator.com/index.php/navigator/regionalnews/bangor_community_to_back_troops_with_beans/
