Message: Here's a great article I found at www.northwestnavigator.com: -- Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Puget Sound at Bangor recently unveiled its Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the FISC supply receiving warehouse at Bangor. The Bangor RFID Evaluation (BRE) project is part of the Navy Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) Program office’s plan to implement an improved logistics system using RFID. The evaluation site at FISC Puget Sound’s managed warehouses combines an integrated module within the SAP framework and a variety of AIT media. RFID tags provide the ability to uniquely identify shipments of material with radio frequency transmissions. “FISC Puget Sound ‘went live’ with the project in March making Bangor, the DoD’s first full-time production pilot for passive RFID,” said Cmdr. Doug Newell, FISC Puget Sound project officer. Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) chose FISC Puget Sound’s Bangor operations because of its relatively streamlined operations and breadth of required functionality. FISC’s primary mission is to service the Pacific Fleet’s Trident submarine force and their related maintenance facilities. “With this new identification system, FISC Puget Sound will be able to better serve customers with increased data accuracy,” said Newell. BRE employs leading edge RFID technology combined with a SAP solution to increase efficiency and data accuracy by eliminating many manual processes. A Common Access Card (CAC) reader attachment validates users to ensure their PKI identity certificate has not expired. BRE also improves the inventory process. BRE will create documents and assign workers for counting. Scanning will be the primary method of inventory. The new technology continues Department of Defense efforts to transform logistics networks. The use of RFID as an enabler to help optimize supply chain management can reduce risk and lead to reductions in inventory requirements, and ultimately reduce costs. http://www.northwestnavigator.com/index.php/navigator/regionalnews/fisc_unveils_new_radio_frequency_technology/
