Message: Here's a great article I found at www.northwestnavigator.com: -- Children and their parents recently gathered at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK), Bangor, Information Tickets and Tours (ITT) library for Tuesday Morning Story Hour. The Tuesday Morning Story Hour encourages young children to read and teaches them reading can be fun. “I try to pick a story that caters to the small ones that’s really short and then I try to pick a medium story that caters to the older children,” said Monica Johnson, NBK Bangor ITT library technician. “I also try to pick one of the books for the girls and then one for the boys. It’s a fun thing and it can be helpful for the parents. We want to encourage parents and children.” ITT library technicians take an hour out of their day every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon and read for any child with base access and their parent, ranging from infants to fourth grade. “I love reading and I want to instill in my children that it’s important to read at a young age,” said Yolanda Ortiz, participating parent. “I think this program is awesome. The children get to learn how to have fun with books. It’s just a good time.” The library technicians read two books, sang songs, danced and finished up with a story board where the children can interact with the story being told. “This is very good,” said Mariko Viertel, participating parent. “We are always looking for something fun for our daughter and since I moved here it has been hard to find fun things to do. We come here every week; I love it.” ITT also offers a Summer Reading Program Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon for children up to age 10 where children read, do crafts, some outdoor activities and listen to guest speakers. “I think this is a very good thing for children,” said Jannett Long, participating parent. “Not only for the reading part but also because they can interact with each other. I think any reading program is good for children but I especially like this one.” For more information on these programs, visit the NBK ITT office or call 535-5918. http://www.northwestnavigator.com/index.php/navigator/regionalnews/itt_library_hosts_weekly_story_hour/
