Message: Here's a great article I found at www.northwestnavigator.com: -- More than 250 Sailors, Marines and their families attended the 5th Annual Right Spirit Fair celebration at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor Fitness and Aquatic Center parking lot, June 26. The purpose of the Right Spirit Fair is to educate the public about the effects of drug use and alcohol abuse. To kick off the special celebration a “You Decide” drinking and driving seminar was held. “It’s important to inform the public about the dangers of alcohol and show Sailors there are other things to do on the weekend besides drinking to have a good time,” said Chief Electrician’s Mate (SS) Brian Williams, Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA) and event coordinator. “Many local businesses are here to showcase different recreational activities available to service members from sports, trips and tours, to kayaking and biking.” The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), displayed a destroyed car caused by a drunken driver and put on a mock car crash. This visual display is a prime example of one of the many consequences that drinking and driving can cause. “This event is a way to get the message out there that drinking and driving kills,” said Williams. “The penalties are huge and I just want people to think before they drink, or at least have a plan.” The fair featured numerous informational booths, with safety demonstrations, a barbeque and entertaining activities for people to participate in. For Electrician’s Mate 1st Class (SW) Justin McBee, assistant event coordinator, the event had an affirmative impact to the community. “Knowledge goes a long way and since we’ve been doing several seminars along with events the statistics of DUI numbers are slowly declining,” said McBee. “Our goal is to enhance fleet readiness by reducing alcohol abuse and related incidents.” For Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class (SS) Dwayne Whiteside, Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) the event was a way to give Sailors other alternatives other than drinking. “There are so many other things to do around here,” said Whiteside. “We want to promote other activities to keep Sailors from turning to drinking and choose to live a healthier lifestyle.” http://www.northwestnavigator.com/index.php/navigator/regionalnews/kitsap_sailors_marines_celebrate_right_spirit_fair/
