Here's a great article I found at www.northwestnavigator.com: -- Sailors assigned to Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Security Department participated in a community relations project at the local Anderson Hill Road overpass, July 10. The Anderson Hill Road Overpass is close to NBK Bangor, and is used by the base to transfer heavy objects via railway. Two students from Central Kitsap High School came up with the idea for the project, and received support from the base and Kitsap County. “Today we have service members from the First Class Association clearing up debris, weeds and plants that have grown all around this road overpass,” said Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW) Andrew Christianson, event coordinator. “We are doing this to help out the students at Central Kitsap High school and to show the community we care.” More than 100 pounds of weeds were cleared up and removed from the overpass.  “I pass this bridge almost every day and I wanted to do something about the graffiti and appearance of this bridge,” said Victoria Cartwright, Central Kitsap High School student, assistant project manager. “I am so grateful the Navy is here helping Kitsap County clear up this road. I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.” Sailors cleared up the railway bridge in preparation for future painting. Many local businesses have donated money and paint toward the restoration of the bridge. For Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class (SW) Angel Anton, NBK Security, participating in COMREL projects is a way to give back to the community. “I wanted to participate because this is a community we all share and I want to show I care by volunteering my time,” said Anton. “Being involved means I am contributing to the community, and I think it’s important to give back by participating in any project I can.” For Laura Fedorko, Central Kitsap High school student project manager, the involvement from the Navy is very much appreciated. “It took a couple years to finally make this happen,” said Fedorko. “It’s finally coming together and I want to personally thank all the military personnel for helping us with this community project.” Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW) Paul Francois, NBK Security, said that volunteering is time well spent. “I am glad I got to be part of this project because it’s helping out the community,” he said. “I know what we are doing makes a little difference, especially to the students who worked hard to make this happen.” http://www.northwestnavigator.com/index.php/navigator/regionalnews/kitsap_sailors_students_revamp_local_overpass/
