Message: Here's a great article I found at www.northwestnavigator.com: -- Navy Region Northwest shore-based Navy College offices will reinstate their Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), General Educational Development (GED), SAT and ACT testing, May 1. All DANTES exams were suspended Feb. 29 due to a suspected compromise of testing material on four Navy ships and at one shore command. “I’m happy to see these tests back,” said Marwan Cameron, Naval Base Kitsap, Bremerton Navy College counselor. “It’s unfortunate Seaman to Admiral (STA) 21 packages were sent incomplete as a result of the suspension, but they allowed it due to DANTES being suspended. Our Bremerton office is offering the Electronic College Level Examination Program (eCLEP) exams now and the score is available instantly so you know if you passed the test as soon as you are done.” GED, SAT and ACT testing will only be available at shore based Navy College offices Navy-wide until further notice from DANTES officials. All DANTES sponsored academic testing aboard Navy ships remains suspended. “Since Feb. 29, we have had more than 20 students who wanted to take either the SAT or ACT and we had to refer to other bases,” said Jerry Hert, NB Kitsap Bangor Navy College director. “We also had several students who were interested in taking the GED and they were not able to take it at that point in time.” “We are really thrilled to be able to offer these tests again, especially for STA-21 applicants,” said Cheryl Pollock, NASWI Navy College director The SAT or the ACT is a requirement for STA-21 officer program packages. “This has had a significant effect to the students because they were ending up having to go to Fort Lewis or McChord Air Force Base in order to take these tests,” said Hert. “The need for the SAT or the ACT is pretty much derived by those student interested in applying for the STA-21 program.” Students wanting to take these exams need to call their Navy college office at least one day prior to examination.
