Everett Navy League seeks to better Sailor’s lives

The recent USS Ford homecoming at Naval Station Everett united families and friends on the pier along with community organizations on hand to support such as the Everett Chamber of Commerce, selected businesses and the Everett Council of the Navy League. For the Navy League, a presence at ship homecomings is just one of many ways the organization supports Sailors and their families. “It’s my way of serving my country, an opportunity to give back,” said Kathy Gambill, current president of the Everett Council and a frequent visitor to the piers at the naval station. “These young people are so wonderful and do so much for us… it’s the least I can do.”

USS Shoup departs Albany

USS Shoup (DDG 86) recently departed the scenic southwest Australian city of Albany. The guided-missile destroyer took part in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Great White Fleet visit to the land “Down Under.” Albany was the third Australian port city, after Sydney and Melbourne, to welcome the U.S. Navy during the historic deployment in 1908. The Great White Fleet’s voyage began in December 1907, when Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, sent 16 battleships, all painted white, and 14,000 men on a global deployment that spanned 43,000 miles, and made port calls on six continents.

Abe Sailors enjoy ancient Thai city replica tours

Although many Sailors aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) spent their liberty time in the local area of Pattaya Beach during the aircraft carrier’s port visit to Thailand, Sept. 12-16, lots of Sailors took the opportunity to tour a 200-acre replica of the country’s ancient cities. As with many tours offered, the Sailors took a scenic drive through the countryside to their destination. The trip was lengthy, at almost two hours, and their tour guide gave the Sailors a brief description of Thai culture and history along the way. The tour guide even translated a few useful terms to use among the locals, such as “hello” and “thank you.”

Shoup commemorates ‘Great White Fleet’ in Australia

The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, USS Shoup (DDG 86) arrived in Albany, Australia Sept. 10 to commemorate the centennial of a landmark event in U.S. Navy history — the voyage of the Great White Fleet. One hundred years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt sent a portion of the Atlantic Fleet on a world tour to test naval readiness, establish global presence, and generate international goodwill. Sixteen battleships, plus auxiliary support ships and 14,000 Sailors and Marines embarked on a 14-month journey that covered some 43,000 miles and made 20 port calls on six continents. The participating ships, painted white except for gilded scrollwork on their bows, later became known as the “Great White Fleet.” This deployment demonstrated to the world that the United States had arrived as a significant, outward-looking world power and a naval force to be reckoned with.
