Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive kicks off at NSE

The 2011 Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) fund drive kicked off at Naval Station Everett (NSE) March 2. The NMCRS was founded in 1904. It is a private, non-profit charitable organization sponsored by the Department of the Navy. Their mission is to provide financial, educational, and other assistance to Sailors, Marines, and their eligible family members and survivors when in need. “Each of us, in some way, has at some time benefited from the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society,” said Capt. Michael Coury, NSE Commanding Officer. “Through their efforts and partnerships, they offer assistance to those who need it and a safety net our families can depend on, because we all need a little extra help now and then.” With the help of enthusiastic tenant command representatives, the annual find drive generates many donations to benefit the local NMCRS.

Sailors raise hope on slopes for cancer

Seven Sailors from Naval Station Everett (NSE) volunteered to participle in the Hope on the Slopes ski and board event at Stevens Pass Ski Resort, Stevens Pass, Wash., to raise money for cancer March 5-6. Hope on the Slopes is a 24-hour skiing event that raises money to support the mission of the American Cancer society. The team from NSE, who called themselves Fo’ Snow, raised a total of $2,297, which far surpassed their goal of $1,400. The money raised through Hope on the Slopes will help support cancer research, patient services, early detection, treatment and education. The team had the opportunity to compete in two separate challenges; the fundraising challenge, and the vertical feet challenge. In the fundraising challenge, the teams competed to see who could raise the most amount of money for the American Cancer Society through the end of the event on March 5. During the Vertical feet challenge, the teams competed to see who could ski the most amount of vertical feet in a 24-hour period.

Liberty, Outdoor Programs offering up fun for Sailors

Naval Station Everett’s Liberty Outfitters Program offers top-notch facilities for fun and relaxation as well as events and opportunities for single Sailors to get out and enjoy local attractions at an affordable price. The Liberty Program has a hip set up at the Commons onboard NAVSTA Everett that includes lounge, billiard, reading, computer and gaming areas. Several times a month, small parties or get-togethers are held specifically catered for the liberty qualified Sailors, either single Sailors or geographically-separated bachelors. They also plan certain events every month like a trip to the movie theater to check out the newest movies, trips to local attractions, and at least one volunteer opportunity. “It gets Sailors off the base,” said Mike Petrowski, Liberty Programs. “A lot of these guys are young and don’t have cars so we can take them out. It’s probably not what they normally do but it lets them enjoy the local culture and scenery.”

NSE hosts swim lessons for all ages

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, drowning is the leading cause of injury death for young children ages one to four, and three children die every day as a result. Thankfully, many parents at Naval Station Everett (NSE) are playing a key role in protecting the children they love by putting them in swimming lessons. Swim lessons are available for children of all ages at the Tsunami Pool located at Naval Station Everett. The lessons are available all year long, with a total of seven different levels to best suit the child’s needs. A child as young as six months can begin taking swimming lessons. They attend a parent/child class which offers the unique opportunity for parents to interact with their child in a fun and safe water environment, with an emphasis on water orientation and water safety.

Lincoln hosts Brunei military leaders

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) hosted 16 guests from Brunei while underway Feb. 22, including senior members of military and government agencies, media reporters, and U.S. Embassy representatives, during a visit to reinforce the partnership the U.S. shares with its 7th Fleet partner. The guests were greeted by Rear Adm. Mark Guadagnini, commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, before attending a formal lunch followed by a full day of tours, discussion forums, a personal briefing by strike group aviators, and interaction with the ship’s crew. Deputy Minister of Defense Dato Paduka Mustappa Sirat was the senior member of the delegation, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Dato Paduka Haji Shofry Hj Abdul Ghafor, Permanent Secretary Pengiran Datin Masrainah, Commander of the Joint Operations Center Col. Aziz Tamit, five others from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, four members of the media, and three members of the Embassy staff.

ASF graduates ready to join NSE Security

Four Sailors completed a rigorous three-week auxiliary security force (ASF) training academy held at Naval Station Everett (NSE) Feb. 18. The graduates will be added to the 40 Sailors currently participating in the ASF program. Their job as ASF watch standers is to assist the base security department with jobs such as checking Identification at entry control points and responding to various emergencies. They would also assist the base security department in the event of a heightened force protection condition. “We have to have ASF as part of the team to make sure we keep the base as safe as possible,” said Gary Goodenbour, ASF Instructor. While at the ASF academy, the Sailors were taught many law enforcement basics such as anti-terrorism, hand-to-hand combat, handcuffing, procedures on searching personnel and vehicles, and weapons training. As first responders, they are also trained in first aid, CPR, and other life-saving practices.

NSE celebrates Black History Month

All hands were present at an annual ceremony held in honor of Black History Month in the Grand Vista Ballroom at Naval Station Everett Feb. 18. “Americans have recognized black history since 1926, first as Negro History Week and later as Black History Month,” said Chief Culinary Specialist Carlos McNeal, NAVSTA Everett, during the ceremony. McNeal introduced the guest speaker, Seattle native Thomas (T.J.) Vassar, Jr., whose father was in the Navy when he was a child. Vassar is now an accomplished public speaker and writer who holds a few different titles at Lakeside School in Seattle, including Diversity Coordinator. Vassar thrived and graduated from Lakeside as a child and was accepted to Harvard University. After graduating there he returned to Seattle and eventually started working at the old private school he once attended as a student.

Families rock out at Valentine’s Dance

The night belonged to the hearts of friends and family members who attended the Valentine Dance held in the Grand Vista Ballroom at Naval Station Everett Feb. 12. “With all the ships out we wanted to give moms the opportunity to still have a nice Valentine’s Day with their kids instead,” said Jody Copeland, NAVSTA Everett Youth Programs. The dance floor attracted those of all ages with music of yester year and today’s popular hits. The event, which was very family friendly, was themed for both moms and dads and their children. So seeing Mom and Dad doing the Macarena was not something out of the ordinary. “I always come to these family events and have lots of fun,” said local Navy retiree Edward Strong.

Sailors help students to academic excellence

Sailors from Naval Station Everett (NSE) are helping young students succeed in school by volunteering as tutors for the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at North Middle School in Everett. AVID is a college readiness program that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance, as well as increase the number of students who enroll in a four year college. The program focuses on the least served students in the academic middle, and encourages those students to take rigorous and challenging courses. The purpose of an AVID tutor is to raise expectations and help the students meet and exceed the academic goals for each class. North Middle School in Everett has introduced this program to their students, and has recently begun using NSE Sailors as AVID tutors.

Navy, community partner to ‘go green’

Naval Station Everett and Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest held an energy roundtable, Feb. 14, with officials from several different establishments in the local community including Washington State University (WSU), Mithun Architects, and more. Officials from different political offices in the state were also in attendance to show their support for energy efficiency. “We go where we are needed and we decisively accomplish our mission, whatever that might be,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus during a Naval Energy Forum in McLean, Va. Oct. 14, 2009. “We must be no less bold in our thinking when it comes to energy reform, no less willing to embrace risk.” Mabus has put an extra emphasis in ‘going green’ for the past couple years. Navy Region Northwest, especially Naval Station Everett, has embraced this challenge and is continuously working towards greater energy efficiency.
