Lincoln chief maximizes distance learning options

One Sailor aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) took part in distance-learning courses and used a personal digital assistant (PDA) to complete them in his free time. Certain colleges have given students the choice to complete coursework on a PDA. These courses provide all the tools of an instructor-based course with the freedom to ‘attend’ the class whenever they have time and in the location of their choice. “It has lectures, quizzes, videos, anything you would receive in an instructor-based course,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman (SW/AW) Russell Cole, of Lincoln’s health services department and Raceland, La., native.

Everett focuses on summer recreational safety

Although summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21, the recent warm weather has brought dusty recreational equipment out of dark garages and into the sunlight. Naval Station Everett’s Safety Department wants to keep Sailors, civilians and families safe this summer. With the warmer temperatures comes the possibility of heat-related injuries. “When working or playing, there is the possibility of a heat injury,” said Fred Matazzoni, NAVSTA Everett safety specialist. As the heat rises, drink more fluids. “Steer clear of caffeinated and high-sugar drinks. Drink mainly water to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade to cool off.”

Sailors tell students to say no to drugs

Sailors from Navy Region Northwest Reserve Component Command talked with students about avoiding drugs and alcohol as part of a Campaign Drug Free (CDF) presentation, May 26-27, at Totem Middle School in Marysville, Wash. The CDF program is a Navy-wide effort, sponsored by the Navy Reserve Force, to get Sailors and Marines in local classrooms to encourage kids to reach their goals by avoiding drugs and alcohol. “I think having service members come in, especially in uniform, is great. The students have a certain amount of respect for their position. And just having somebody from the community come in and talk to them allows them to ask questions of and get a different, real-life perspective,” said Sandy Olsen, Intervention Specialist at Totem Middle school who deals directly with the students whose lives, one way or another, are affected by drugs or alcohol.

Ingraham successfully completes INSURV

USS Ingraham (FFG 61) recently completed its Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). After two days of underway materiel inspection and one day in-port equipment demonstration, the INSURV team deemed the Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate “fit for sustained combat operations at sea.” “Ingraham is the cleanest and best preserved frigate I have seen,” said Capt. Mark Hoyle, the senior INSURV inspector, “and I’ve been on every single frigate on the East Coast.” Occurring once every three-to-five years, INSURV is a congressionally mandated inspection that determines a ship’s material condition and her capability to carry out assigned missions. Each inspection team, comprised of both military and civilian personnel, conducts a

Sailors plus commissary equals savings

Naval Station Everett’s Liberty Program and Smokey Point Commissary teamed up to provide single Sailors and geo-bachelors a good look at the benefits commissaries offer. The 2nd annual Commissary Awareness event held May 13 in conjunction with Commissary Awareness Month showed Sailors “It’s Worth the Trip” to visit the commissary. “Our goal is to make you become a regular shopper,” said Leva Fairley, Smokey Point Commissary General Manager. “We have the same products they have out in town at better prices.” Overall commissary savings are 30 percent when comparing prices to local grocery stores. Some of the departments have an even greater savings such as meat at 46 percent and 55 percent for spices. Sailors took a tour of the store, pricing items along the way.

Navy history pays visit to Everett

Every Sailor has been taught naval history at some point in his or her career, but simply reading from a book doesn’t always give the whole picture of the battles or events being studied. Naval Station Everett and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9 recently played backdrop to a television production that brings history to life. Capt. Carol Hottenrott, deputy commander of DESRON 9, along with Lou Reda Productions and World War II veteran Jack Yusen, joined forces in the filming of scenes for the new program, “WWII HD,” which will air on the History Channel later this year. “It’s a 10-part series that incorporates color footage from World War II we’ve converted to HD,” said director Frederick Lumiere. “The series follows 10 characters and intertwines their stories with real footage and interviews. Actors will voice the younger versions of the characters to try to bring a new audience to the show.”
