Navy donates during tday’s difficult times

The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) provides federal employees the opportunity to easily and conveniently donate as little or as much funds to their choices of a wide selection of charities and organizations. Every year employees select whichever organization they choose to contribute to. They then hand in a cash donation or sign up to have however much money they want a month transferred from their pay. In 2010, the military in the North Puget Sound area exceeded all goals and expectations. “As a whole it (CFC) includes all federal employees,” said Lt.j.g. John R. Kelly, campaign executive, CFC North Puget Sound. “But the reason I want to bring up the military success is because in the down economy we have actually surpassed our goals for the year and surpassed what we did last year whereas the rest of the agencies aren’t keeping up.”

Start year right with fitness

January brings a new year, a time most people take to create a fresh start by setting New Year’s resolutions. A common item on these lists of resolutions is a health and fitness goal. Some people want to drop a few pounds and some people want to lift more weight. Whatever the fitness goal is, Naval Station Everett’s gym facility and instructors are there to help. This year, NSE’s fitness staff created a ‘Resolutionathon.’ It is a series of 90 minute classes every day January 10-14 at 11 a.m. Throughout the week, participants will be able to experience the large variety of classes the gym offers on a regular basis. “In the couple years past we’ve always done the biggest loser challenge and this year we decided to kick it off with all the new fitness equipment we have and the new instructors,” said Michelle Galasso, Fitness Manager.

Sailors remember Pearl Harbor with local heroes

Former President Theo-dore Roosevelt described it as “a date that will live in infamy.” Indeed it is as every Dec. 7 the country remembers those that fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice at Pearl Harbor that Sunday morning in 1941. “More than 3,500 Americans were killed or wounded, and the images of burning battleships and the grief for lives lost were forever seared into our national memory,” said President Barack Obama in the 2010 Presidential Proclamation – National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Sailors and civilians on board Naval Station Everett gathered together with local veterans Dec. 7 for a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony. In the crowd were survivors from the attack and family members of those that bravely fought in the battle at Pearl Harbor.

Dental machine saves time, money

Naval Station Everett’s (NSE) Dental department recently received a new, revolutionary piece of technology called the CEREC (CEramic REConstruction) machine. The machine, made by Sirona, enables dentists to crown a patient’s tooth in substantially less time and with fewer appointments than before. “A crown is used to encapsulate the tooth and bring the tooth back to natural contour and form,” said Lt. Tabitha Cummings, . “What the CEREC machine does is allow us to prepare the crown in a two to three hour appointment right here in the clinic.” When a crown was needed in the past more than one visit to the clinic was required. During these visits the tooth was prepared, an impression was taken, and a temporary restoration was placed. Then, many weeks later, the patient would make another appointment to remove the temporary restoration and have the permanent one cemented.
