Steel beach picnic brings Abe Sailors together

Sailors aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) recently took a break from their schedules to gather on the flight deck for a steel beach picnic. Sailors put work on the back-burner and engaged in various sporting events, listened to music performed by Lincoln’s own rock band, Death By Chicken, and DJ Onitap of the ship’s KRUZ Radio, and ate barbecue.

Navigation steers Abe in the right direction

Every Sailor aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), whether they’re a culinary specialist, air traffic controller, or master-at-arms, each plays an important role in how the ship runs. But who makes sure the ship and crew get to where they’re going safely? Quartermasters assigned to Lincoln’s Navigation Department are responsible for plotting courses and driving the ship to where it needs to be.

Abe’s Flight Deck Control keeps aircraft in motion

It is a training environment — tense, but highly coordinated. Flight Deck Control is bustling with activity on board the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier currently deployed to the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet area of responsibility. Sailors in float coats of all colors are coming in to the space relaying information. A buzz of voices fills the room. A Yellow Shirt sits observing and listening. He watches the situation unfolding on the flight deck.

Everett MA’s train Sea Cadets

Sea cadets from the Naval Sea Cadets Corps (NSCC) received Master-at-arms (MA) training at Naval Station Everett (NSE), July 16. The mission of NSCC is to provide American youth with a positive drug- and alcohol-free environment which promotes esprit de corps, fosters leadership, open the pupils’ eyes to opportunities through hands-on training and to give them guidance in becoming productive, mature adults. According to MA1 (SW) Doug Terou, NSE instructor, the sea cadets will receive the training for two weeks.

Naval Station Everett held its annual education fair for Sailors, their spouses and Department of Defense civilians at the Commons, July 21. Naval College Office invited more than 20 local and national colleges with hundreds of degrees to choose, all with one purpose in mind – that of helping Sailors to advance or begin their educational goals.

Lincoln begins first-responder medical process

“Medical emergency, medical emergency” is an announcement Sailors often hear over the 1MC on board USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). For Health Services Department this announcement is critical. A medical emergency response team is always ready to respond. Chief Hospital Corpsman (SW/AW) Russell Cole is one of the senior corpsmen that coordinates the medical emergency response teams. He said the department developed a new process of responding to medical emergencies in order to reduce the amount of 1MC announcements in case it’s a simple case and not an actual emergency.

Momsen assists motor vessel in Arabian Sea

USS Momsen (DDG 92) and its embarked helicopter detachment recently provided assistance at sea to Motor Vessel Lehmann Timber. Lehmann Timber experienced a main engine casualty, leaving it unable to operate at sea. Assigned to Combined Task Force (CTF) 150, Momsen is providing food and water to the motor vessel until a tug arrives to tow the Lehmann Timber to Salalah, Oman where it will undergo repairs.

Everett Sailors dive into scuba classes

Naval Station Everett Outdoor Recreation Programs offered a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) scuba certification course for active duty military, retirees, DoD employees and their families July 7-13. According to Steven King, dive instructor, the purpose of the course is to give the participants something fun to do and, in addition, to give them a skill in which they can grow.

Momsen makes port call in Seychelles

USS Momsen (DDG 92) recently arrived in Victoria, Seychelles, marking its fourth international port visit as part of USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group 2008 deployment. The unique port visit affords Momsen’s crew of 300 Sailors to experience the culture and hospitality of Seychelles. Sailors spent time sightseeing and participating in a variety of friendship-building and community-service projects of the host country.

GQ drills increase readiness response on Lincoln

After completing a work day of 12 hours or more, Sailors aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) practice the highest state of combat readiness during general quarters (GQ) drills. GQ is imperative to the survival and mission of the ship, but preparing for an actual GQ situation is even more crucial. As Sailors practice countless situations that could take place on the ship, they learn the fundamental basics of what it takes to fight and survive in any battle that confronts them.
