May is military spouse appreciation month

Military spouses often endure long periods of loneliness while their spouse is deployed; they are left to raise their children alone and find themselves relocating and having to make new friends every couple of years. They ensure mortgages are paid, leaky faucets are repaired and homework is done; they are the warriors of the homefront. They wipe tears, bandage scraped knees and lie awake at night, hoping and praying their loved one is safe. Yet through it all they are still the loudest and proudest of their service member and the command in which they represent.

Foreign defense attaches` visit Everett

Service members from various countries visited Naval Station Everett to get a glimpse of Navy Region Northwest as well as see what the newest base in the U.S. Navy’s fleet has to offer, May 19. The group was composed of representatives from Argentina, Germany and as far away as Singapore to see quality of life of regional personnel, a training exercise and what the Sailors of the Pacific Northwest do on a day-to-day basis.

Sailors say fit with Average Joe Triathlon

Naval Station Everett Sailors competed in the annual “Average Joe” Triathlon, May 6, as part of the continuing activities for Fitness Challenge Week. The competition, held in conjunction with National Physical Education and Sports Month, was used to push its participants’ physical endurance in various strenuous activities.

Momsen OODs lend female touch

USS Momsen (DDG 92) has enjoyed two months of its 5th Fleet deployment, sailing West through the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Along the way, Momsen visited Palau, Brunei and recently Mombasa, Kenya. Although this is Momsen’s second deployment, this is its first deployment operating with the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group. Momsen, an Aegis guided-missile destroyer, home ported in Everett, conducted extensive unit and joint level training for more than a year to reach this stage of deployment, exercising superb proficiency in air, surface and subsurface warfare.

Everett hosts NRNW Police Academy graduation

Navy Region Northwest (NRNW) swore in 15 new police officers during a graduation ceremony for Class 2008-1 on board Naval Station Everett and at Smokey Point May 9. The graduation was the culmination of a grueling 10-week course designed to give the new officers all the skills they’ll need to perform their job.

Pearl Harbor survivor honored in Oregon

Retired World War II Navy veteran, Chief Warrant Officer George Lair, was recently honored by the Oregon Health Care Foundation’s Senior Wishes Forget-Me-Not program for his 28 years of Navy service “Larry,” as George Lair was known to everyone around him, was aboard the USS Nevada Dec. 7 1941. Nevada was in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for shore leave en route to Bremerton, Wash. when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

Everett Sailor awarded scholarship

The Columbia College Naval Station Everett Campus recently announced that Enginemen 1st Class (SW/AW) Jerod Viall is the recipient of the college’s spring semester Harry Carter Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, worth $150, is awarded to a deserving Columbia College student each semester to help defray the cost of textbooks.

Brunei visit offers Momsen Sailors engagement opportunities

On the afternoon of April 16, USS Momsen (DDG 92) moored pierside in Muara Harbor, Brunei, where the crew spent three days exploring its culture by engaging in several recreational activities and community relations projects. This port visit granted Momsen Sailors an opportunity to not only represent the U.S. Navy, but also represent the United States during the cross-cultural experience.

Ingraham helps out Saipan school

USS Ingraham (FFG 61) made its final liberty port call, April 16, during its six-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf. The warship moored at the tropical island of Saipan, located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 150 miles north of Guam. As the crew disembarked for liberty a group of Sailors headed for a community relations project at Marianas High School.

Lincoln hosts Indonesian visitors

Ambassadors and senior military officials from Indonesia visited USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) for a tour and to observe a display of its air power April 23. Distinguished visitors included U.S. Ambassador Cameron Hume of the U.S. Embassy, Special Advisor to the Minister of Marine Affairs Ambassador Professor Dr. Hasyim Djalal, and Naval Attaché Capt. Kevin Wilson of the U.S. Embassy among several other high-ranking military officials.
