Everett Fitness Center kicks off ‘Irongoat’ triathlon

Naval Station Everett’s Irongoat Triathlon kicked off at the Seismos Fitness Center March 1.
Participants have the 31 days in March to complete the distances of an Ironman, a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. This is the third year of the self-directed program.
“Our Average Joe Triathlon was so popular we were looking for ways to enhance it,” said Julia Krassin, NAVSTA Everett fitness manager. “We decided to make it the distance of an Ironman and give people the month of March to complete it.”
The events do not have to be completed on base, but athletes have the option to use fitness classes, the Seismos Fitness Center and the Tsunami Pool to finish the triathlon.
“People really like it,” Krassin said. “It gets people on the track, in the pool and on the road and gets them ready for the upcoming physical readiness test as well.”
More than 150 athletes participated during the past two years with 200 anticipated this year. With the increasing participation, the event is drawing attention from all over the Navy.
“The fitness director from Italy called me wanting the program,” Krassin said. “Ships and Reservists here on drill weekends have asked for it. It’s a real fun thing.”
Athletes mark their progress on a chart in front of gear issue at the gym.
“People get competitive to see who will finish first,” Krassin said.
Electronics Technician 2nd Class Robert Quanbeck, NAVSTA Everett assistant command fitness leader, said all the Fitness Enhancement Program personnel for the base are participating.
“It will test them physically, but it should be fun,” he said.
