Everett focuses on summer recreational safety

Although summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21, the recent warm weather has brought dusty recreational equipment out of dark garages and into the sunlight. Naval Station Everett’s Safety Department wants to keep Sailors, civilians and families safe this summer.

With the warmer temperatures comes the possibility of heat-related injuries.

“When working or playing, there is the possibility of a heat injury,” said Fred Matazzoni, NAVSTA Everett safety specialist. As the heat rises, drink more fluids.  “Steer clear of caffeinated and high-sugar drinks. Drink mainly water to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade to cool off.”

The hotter temperatures can come with sunshine. Although the Seattle area is known for cloudy days, sun exposure can lead to sunburn.

“Everyone should wear sunscreen, but fair-skinned individuals need to be especially careful,” Matazzoni said.

Being careful extends to other areas of recreational safety as well. Operational Risk Management (ORM) should be used by all Sailors and supervisors to ensure an appropriate level of oversight and leadership involvement is provided to personnel engaging in high-risk recreational activities.

“Supervisors need to check with their people to see what activities they are going to participate in over the weekend,” said Matazzoni. The Navy requires personnel to take motorcycle training classes, but other high-risk activities should be prepared for as well.  “If your folks are planning to participate in a high-risk activity such as jet skiing or mountain climbing, make sure they are prepared.”

Another popular pastime is gathering family and friends for barbeque. Be sure to have safety equipment on standby.

“Make sure you have the proper fire extinguisher handy,” said Matazzoni. “You can’t use water on a grease fire.”

Along with grilled items, comes other food and beverages. Keep cold foods like potato salad on ice and be mindful of how much alcohol is being consumed.

“When the weather heats up, the effects of alcohol can be increased,” Matazzoni said.  “Be mindful of how much you drink especially when participating in recreational activities.”
