With the summer holidays just around the corner, Naval Station Everett held its annual Health and Safety Fair at the Commons May 21.

“We hold the event to coincide with National Health and Fitness month,” said Julia Krassin, NAVSTA Everett Fitness Manager.  The fair had 33 booths and demonstrations showcasing topics ranging from healthy eating to outdoor activities.

“We wanted to show what we have available for recreation,” Krassin said.  “So many people don’t know what we have to offer.  For example, we have tents, campers and canoes to rent — all those things that make summer so enjoyable for families.”

Along with the outdoor display of a camper, the base fire department held a jaws of life demonstration in Jackson Plaza, cutting the roof off a car.  They also set up a simulated grease fire for participants to extinguish.

With another demonstration, a preschool class from the NAVSTA Everett Child Development Center came to show how easy it is to get some exercise.  The Zumba Fitness and Yoga instructors took turns showing the class how to keep moving with exercise.

“The instructors showed the kids that just moving could get them some exercise and also showed adults that moving with some music they enjoy can get them working hard,” Krassin said.
