Naval Station Everett’s Liberty Outfitters Program offers top-notch facilities for fun and relaxation as well as events and opportunities for single Sailors to get out and enjoy local attractions at an affordable price.

The Liberty Program has a hip set up at the Commons onboard NAVSTA Everett that includes lounge, billiard, reading, computer and gaming areas. Several times a month, small parties or get-togethers are held specifically catered for the liberty qualified Sailors, either single Sailors or geographically-separated bachelors.

They also plan certain events every month like a trip to the movie theater to check out the newest movies, trips to local attractions, and at least one volunteer opportunity.

“It gets Sailors off the base,” said Mike Petrowski, Liberty Programs. “A lot of these guys are young and don’t have cars so we can take them out. It’s probably not what they normally do but it lets them enjoy the local culture and scenery.”

Volunteer opportunities are a big hit with young Sailors since it is a fun way to get out and help others. The time also counts toward their Navy volunteer hours. Volunteer efforts include Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, and a local retirement home.

Liberty also partners with the Outdoor Recreation Program to give single Sailors discounted prices for the planned outdoor events such as ski trips and hikes.

Outdoor Recreation offers ski and snowboard shuttles every Saturday through March. For a little extra, participants can actually sign up for a snowshoe trip with a guide March 5, 12, and 19.

Starting in April, Outdoor Recreation will be hosting events that include bike rides and hikes. Every event is planned to get Sailors and their families out to enjoy the Pacific Northwest.

“Discover the Washington you didn’t know was there,” said Aaron Johnson, Outdoor Recreation programmer. “There’s so much to do here.”

Participants can enjoy a beautiful bike ride through the Tulip Festival in April. April 9 the ride will be immediately followed by a salmon barbecue and April 16 the ride will be preceded by a chili, chowder and chocolate festival. The trip, including a bike rental is only $20 for Liberty qualified Sailors and $25 for everyone else. The food for each weekend will cost a little extra.

The Liberty and Outdoor Recreation Programs are also open to ideas from Sailors. If a group of about five or more people want to participate in a certain event or take a certain trip that is not offered already, they just have to talk to the programmers at NAVSTA Everett.

“We can talk about it, the price and setting it up,” said Johnson. “We’re open to do anything like that.”
