NCLC offers Sailors lots of opportunities

Naval Station Everett Navy College Learning Center (NCLC) is offering educational opportunities to Sailors who wish to better themselves during their career.

Everett NCLC’s goal is to give a series of classes aimed at improving Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) scores, as the Navy continues to improve and update the Perform to Serve program (PTS).

The new Zone B PTS program requires that Sailors with more than 6 months and less than 10 years active duty service are be required to get an approval before being able to extend their existing EAOS or negotiate orders prior to their reenlistment.

“With all the new regulations regarding Perform to Serve, we wanted to inform Sailors and invite them to come to our office and to help better their education levels,” said Nina Purcell, NSE NCLC. “Our desire is to make known to our Sailors what we have to offer them so that they can continue their Navy careers.”

One satisfied Sailor said the staff’s professionalism made an impact on him to press forward to pursue success.

“I just recently took the pre-test for the ASVAB in order to improve my score,” said Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Timothy Manley, USS Ingraham (FFG 61). “Upon entering the classroom I was greeted by the instructor in a professional manner and when I told her of my situation, she set me up for the pre-test to see where I stood and what was needed for improvement to obtain my goal.”

Ingraham command career counselor, Navy Counselor 1st Class (SW) John Oliveira, said the NCLC is vital to Sailors who are facing PTS selection.

“Without the ability to improve their AFQT scores to pursue other rates, most will be forced to separate before they ever get started in their careers,” said Oliveira. “Sustaining superior performance is just one of the ingredients for the complete Sailor; you also have to be smarter to compete for the dwindling reenlistment PTS quotas.”

NCLC is all about the Sailor shooting for a higher position and improving upon their skills in order to better their life in, and outside, the Navy.

“This is a good remedial for taking your ASVAB to prepare for college as well,” said Boatswainís Mate Seaman Nicole McLaughlin. “I absolutely would recommend to other Sailors to come in and take a little time to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.”

“Overall I was pretty satisfied on how they conducted business and I believe my ASVAB score will improve thanks to the plan they laid out for me,” said Manley. “If there’s anyone out there who needs to improve their ASVAB score whether they’re trying to cross rate or get into a rate, the NCLC will set you up for success.”
