New pier trailer shortens food lines

Yards away from ships moored at Naval Station Everett, a new addition to the Pierside Plaza will go a long way toward reducing time Sailors and civilians spend waiting in line to buy food.
“The food here is good,” said Fireman Mark Guttu, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). “And now you don’t have to wait so long in line.”
That vote of approval came in response to a new mobile kitchen trailer installed at Naval Station Everett’s pierside plaza. Previously, Sailors looking for a fast food fix often waited in long lines at the existing grill located in the pierside building.
According to catering manager Jocelyn Cardona, when NAVSTA Everett Commanding Officer, Capt. Eddie Gardiner saw Sailors waiting in line, he turned to community services (formerly MWR), which manages the pierside plaza.
“The CO came to us and asked, ‘What are you going to do about that?’” Cardona said. “This trailer was our answer.”
Community Services already owned the kitchen trailer, purchased in 1993 for use at sporting events. The unit was brought out of storage, and two additional food service workers hired to staff the trailer, which serves the same food as the main grill inside the plaza.
The trailer, officially dubbed “Pierside Mobile Annex,” more than doubles the serving capacity of the wharfside facility.
The Pierside Plaza contains a free laundry facility, with more than 40 washers and dryers available. The plaza also hosts an Internet center, big screen TV and video game console lounge. Customers enjoy views of Everett Harbor and can dine on an outdoor balcony with a great view of a thriving colony of California sea lions and grey harbor seals.
For the Sailors and civilian contractors, the plaza’s main customers, the mobile kitchen trailer is a welcome addition to the facilities.
“It saves time,” said Guttu, “and, the trailer serves hot dogs. You can’t get hot dogs in the main building.”
