Northwest Navigator: News and Information from Navy Region Northwest in Washington State's Puget Sound, including Bremerton, Kitsap County, Oak Harbor, and Everett

NSE basketball season ends

The Naval Station Everett Intramural (IM) Basketball Tournament was held March 14-17 at the Commons Gymnasium.

“Much like the NCAA tournament, we had last second wins, upsets, big plays and a lot of excitement in the gym. We had a bit of everything,” said Ross Price, NAVSTA Everett sports coordinator.

Six teams comprised of Sailors and dependents from various commands competed in the double elimination tournament. The commands represented included: Naval Operation Support Center (NOSC), Navy Region Northwest Reserve Component Command (RCCNW), Navy Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF), USS Ford (FFG 54), USS Ingraham (FFG 61), USS Lincoln (CVN 72) Beach Detachment, Honor Guard, Personnel Support Detachment (PSD) and USCG Sector Puget Sound.

In the first round matchups the six seed from IMF upset the three seed from NOSC/RCC with a defensive 45-36 victory.  IMF then advanced and knocked off the two seed from the USCG 60-52.  The “Nobodys” from IMF made a name for themselves finishing in third place in the tournament.  The USCG had a tough road ahead after losing their first game, needing to win the next three games to have a shot at the championship.  They did exactly that, averaging 55 points per game over the next three games.  This set up a one vs. two final between the Ford and the USCG respectively.

The game was a defensive struggle as both teams scored their lowest totals of the tournament. In the end it was the Ford who captured the title with a 48-30 win. This is the second consecutive IM championship for the Ford who won the Volleyball tournament for 2010.

Seth Lindauer, USS Ford, was named tournament MVP. He led his team in scoring with 42 points and was very active on defense. He also gave up a lot of open looks to confuse the opposition’s defense by dishing the ball all over the court to his open team mates.

“Being named MVP was great, I’m just glad that I got to play with such a great group of guys who supported each other,” said Lindauer. “At the beginning of the season we all kind of set aside our egos and decided that we would get the ball to whoever was hot at the time and luckily it paid off all season long, especially in the tournament.”

The Ford along with all the other teams who played in the IM league have been invited to play in the 2011 “Homecoming Hoops Tournament”. This tournament will welcome back Sailors from deployment and give them a chance to compete against the teams from the 2011 season. Also coming up for IM Sports will be Softball and Spring Golf.
