Sailors build homes, community relations

Amidst the sounds of hammer strikes, buzzing saws and friendly banter is an undercurrent of excitement at 6624 Broadway in Everett as Sailors and local volunteers worked together to build homes for Habitat for Humanity.
Navy volunteers play an active role in the Everett community with a wide array of programs and activities. Naval Station Everett command volunteer coordinator, Operation Specialist 1st Class (SW) Anthony Battista says Habitat for Humanity is one of the most popular of the volunteer programs for local Sailors.
“So many Sailors volunteer for Habitat for Humanity because it almost always turns out to be a good time,” said Battista. “Being able to get out into the community to not only work for a common goal, but to be able to learn so much in the process has been a huge draw for our volunteers.”
Volunteers worked to produce the flooring for the second story to one of the four homes on the current project. Interaction was the word of the day as the chill Washington wind whipped through the lot. From the most inexpert nail and hammer handlers to the veteran volunteers, spirits were high as the day went on and the flooring was completed.
“Seeing the house go from studs and joists to a complete floor is pretty rewarding,” said Machinists Mate 3rd Class Shawn Conrad, NAVSTA Everett volunteer.
“It’s really great the way the Navy is out here volunteering,” said Jan Kalshian, Habitat for Humanity. “We are only able to do this on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the level of commitment we see from the Navy is a huge part of getting this done.”
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian ministry program founded on the principle that every man, woman and child should have a safe, decent place to live. The program welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds and skill levels, and is provided by individuals, corporations and faith groups, according to http://www.habitat.org{{PERIOD}}
