Swim meet a splashing success

Rebecca Troutman swims the butterfly stroke during the medley relay at the command swim meet Feb. 24. Troutman also swam the 500 and 50 yard freestyle and the 100-yard medley where the swimmer swims one lap of four different strokes each. She placed first in the 500 yard freestyle and the medley and second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Naval Station Everett conducted a Captain’s Cup swim meet at Seismos Fitness Center Feb. 24.

Forty people from different commands showed up to compete and even more were there to show their support. The commands represented included NAVSTA Everett, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, the Dive Locker, Carrier Strike Group 9, Destroyer Squadron 9, USS Momsen, Northwest Reserve Component Command, USS Cape St. George, and the U.S. Air Force Recruiter District. Three family members and a retiree also participated in the event.

“It was definitely a success. The amount of participation for the event on this base alone is what we usually see at regional size events,” said PJ Mallon, aquatics manager at Seismos and the event coordinator for the swim meet.

Swimmers signed up for one or more events that included the freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, and butterfly. There was also a relay race in which each swimmer swam a different stoke, and an individual medley race in which one swimmer swam all four strokes.

This was the first time this caliber of swim meet was held at the Everett base.

And according to Mallon, the swim meet was a huge success.

“It’s being discussed that the event may take place as often as every quarter,” said Mallon.
