VITA tax center here for you

Filing for an income tax return isn’t always fun, but it can be easy thanks to the men and women of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) office.
The VITA tax center, located on the second deck of the Naval Reserve Center Building 2106, is now offering free tax services for all active duty personnel, their spouses and retirees until April 15. VITA will be operating Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Several documents are needed to for the tax center to properly file taxes, said Electrician’s Mate Chief(SW/AW) Michael Tiffany who, along with EMC(SW) Scott Goedelmann, is directing the tax center.
“To have your taxes done, you need to bring in any W-2 forms you have, social security numbers for yourself as well as your dependants, any 1099 forms you have and two forms of I.D,” said Tiffany.
Also needed are bank and mortgage statements, gambling wins or losses and any forms claiming interest or income, added Goedelmann.
Tiffany said that donations to the Red Cross tsunami relief and recovery efforts are tax deductible. They can be claimed this year or the next, whichever is more beneficial.
Last year, by using VITA, Everett Sailors saved an average of $136 they otherwise would have paid in town to have their taxes done. Around 1,500 returns were processed by VITA giving Everett Sailors a total of $2,285,680 in refunds last tax season.
Goedelmann encouraged all Sailors on Everett to take advantage of this useful resource.
“It’s your money. If you want it back, come in here and get it,” he said.
