Sailors, family members, and civilians from the local community gathered to mark the beginning of October with a silent witness walk and candlelight vigil at Jackson Park, Sept 30, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
After a 45 minute walk around military housing in Jackson Park, participants gathered at the Jackson Park chapel for a vigil focusing on a traveling memorial of silhouettes honoring victims of domestic violence who have been killed by their abusers in the Kitsap county community. On each silhouette, there is a name, age and a story of a person killed during a domestic dispute.
“It’s good to be aware of domestic violence, because people often think it’s not going to happen to them,” said Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Amanda Edwards, Naval Base Kitsap security officer. “Being informed about the warning signs, as well as some of the horror stories of what has happened to victims here in the Northwest is important.”

Naval Base Kitsap Commanding Officer, Capt. Mark Olson, is on a mission to clean up the base and needs your help. The problem stems from both an abundance of trash scattered throughout the facilities and the rise in abandoned vehicles.
The removal of 117 suspected abandoned vehicles from Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) last year was a costly venture in both funds and manpower.
Parking on Naval Base Kitsap is strictly controlled and is a privilege, not a right of the owner. Vehicles found abandoned will be ticketed and towed within 72-96 hours.
Vehicles cannot consume parking spaces on base if you are deployed or at-sea for longer than 30 days. Fleet deployed parking is available for those occasions. Call 627-4026/4054 for access.

Legend Harley Buell, Wash., motorcycle dealership presented a check for $500 to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Oct. 1.
The donation will be used to assist Sailors and Marines, active, retired and their family members to achieve financial self-sufficiency and find solutions to emergency needs.
“This is the third year that we have made a contribution to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. It normally comes in the latter part of September, or the first part of October,” said John Towers, marketing manager and 20-year Navy veteran. “We live in a veteran’s community all the way from Port Orchard to the end of the peninsula, and the Navy’s been around for many, many years. If you weren’t in the military, or if you were a civilian working on a base, you would know that all of your neighbors, in one way or another are attached to the military.”
Missile Technician 1st Class (SS) Eric Knecht, USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) (Blue) said that the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society has benefited Sailors for a long time.

The nature trail that winds through the forested grounds of Naval Hospital Bremerton is back open for use. Under the direction and guidance from several key members of the command’s facilities management team, the successful restoration of the trail has been an environmentally-sound and environmentally-friendly undertaking with multiple benefits.
“Our goal from the beginning has been to completely restore the natural habitat as much as we can and a big part of that is the installation restoration of our nature trail,” said Ramon Calantas, NHB Environmental Management System (EMS) coordinator.
According to Calantas, the trail had been closed for approximately a year due to clean-up efforts and an ongoing munitions investigation for left-over debris from when the site was part of a Navy ammunition depot until well after the World War II.
