Dog handler works with unique partner

Master-At-Arms 2nd Class Leroy Williams Jr., a military working dog (MWD) handler on board Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor works with a unique partner. His partner is MWD Zorro an eight year-old Jack Russell Terrier. “I never worked with a terrier,” said Williams. “I always had German shepherds and the smallest dog I worked with was 80 pounds. Zorro weighs 24 pounds.” Williams reported to NBK Bangor in March, when he was paired together with Zorro.

Country music artist performs in Bremerton

Musician Randy Houser performed for military members and their families during a free show at Sam Adams restaurant onboard Naval Base Kitsap, July 21. Randy Houser has written hit songs titled “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and “Anything Goes”. He has also written for artists such as Trace Adkins, John Michael Montgomery, and Chris Young. The performance was sponsored by the United Service Organization (USO) and Seattle country radio station KMPS FM.

Keyport walk-run to benefit Ammon Memorial Fund

The Keyport Scholarship Fund is sponsoring a walk-run to benefit the Lt. Jeffrey Ammon Memorial Fund as a part of NUWC Keyport’s Diversity Day Aug. 7. Keyport’s Diversity Day is an annual event that grows in scope each year. This year, the desire to hold a walk-run to encourage good health resulted from the idea of a honoring a fallen hero.

Some people have a knack for getting themselves into that “hurry up and wait” scenario and the newer Common Access Card (CAC) ID card seems to be a big offender, sometimes. Sometimes people can get in and get out with their shiny new ID card before you even knew they were there. Why is it some people get it done fast and others simply don’t?

Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor chapel hosted a summer Vacation Bible School (VBS) for children July 13-July 17. This year’s theme was “Power Lab,” which included many different pictures of chemistry bottles and scientific formulas and was the subject of many of their activities throughout week.

Security battalion Marines, Sailors hold Summer Olympics

Sailors and Marines assigned to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion at Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor spent the afternoon tangling themselves in knots, battling each other in combat dodge ball and pulling an armored tactical vehicle during a battalion-wide competition July 17. The event, dubbed “The Olympics,” featured 10 events such as an 11-General Orders relay race, tire-flipping race, the human knot and tug of war. Nearly 350 Sailors and Marines formed 12 teams and battled it out during one of their last chances to have some fun as a group before going under the wire or taking over security duties.

MCSFB gets weapons savvy in UK

What can make Sailors or Marines that guard some of the nation’s highest value assets better? What can make them more prepared, both mentally and physically, for an adverse situation? The answer is training, training and more training. A platoon of Sailors and Marines from Marine Corps Security Force Battalion (MCSFB), Bangor recently retuned from a two-week trip to the United Kingdom as a part of Exercise Tartan Eagle. The team conducted weapons training with the British Royal Marines that offered a wider variety of combat scenarios, which improved their confidence and marksmanship.

Kitsap Sailors, Habitat for Humanity build homes for locals

Service members helped build and fabricate homes as part of the Habitat for Humanity program at the Bremerton New Hope building site July 11. “Volunteering is the right thing to do,” said Chief Electrician’s Mate Perry Williams, Intermediate Maintenance Facility. “Sailors get a chance to learn something new each time they come out.” Habitat for Humanity works with community partners to fund home-building projects that provide home ownership opportunities to low-income families.

Kitsap Sailors, Students Revamp Local Overpass

Sailors assigned to Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Security Department participated in a community relations project at the local Anderson Hill Road overpass, July 10. The Anderson Hill Road Overpass is close to NBK Bangor, and is used by the base to transfer heavy objects via railway. Two students from Central Kitsap High School came up with the idea for the project, and received support from the base and Kitsap County.

Kitsap Sailors compete in indoor Olympics competition

More than 150 service members and their family members participated in an Indoor Olympics Competition held at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bremerton Recreation Center, July 12. Participants competed in recreational games such as bowling, billiards, table tennis, and gaming console competitions.
