Post 9/11 G.I. Bill doubles educational benefits

President George W. Bush recently signed into law the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, which will replace the current Montgomery GI Bill with much more robust and generous educational opportunities for post-9/11 service members. The new bill grants servicemembers who have served at least three years and at least 90 days of post-9/11 service with full tuition for the price up to the most expensive in-state public university, a housing stipend and an allowance for books and fees, none of which is currently provided.

Kitsap Sailors, Marines perform ‘Sunset Parade’

More than 500 service members, family members and guests attended the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion (MCSFB) Sunset Parade at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor procession field, July 2. The evening show honors the “Colors” observance, the lowering of the nation’s flag at sunset which is done every day throughout the sea services and across America. Lt. Col. William Hittinger, commanding officer of MCSFB, addressed everyone in attendance and thanked them for coming to the special ceremony.

Sailors from the ballistic missile submarine USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) (Gold) team held a command physical training (PT) session on board Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor, July 2. The Sailors proudly displayed the Navy’s new PT uniform, being the first command to purchase them when they went on sale at NBK Bangor June 30.

ITT Library hosts weekly story hour

Children and their parents recently gathered at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK), Bangor, Information Tickets and Tours (ITT) library for Tuesday Morning Story Hour. The Tuesday Morning Story Hour encourages young children to read and teaches them reading can be fun. “I try to pick a story that caters to the small ones that’s really short and then I try to pick a medium story that caters to the older children,” said Monica Johnson, NBK Bangor ITT library technician. “I also try to pick one of the books for the girls and then one for the boys. It’s a fun thing and it can be helpful for the parents. We want to encourage parents and children.”

‘Leadership Kitsap’ graduates six area Navy employees

Six Navy civilian employees from naval facilities in Kitsap County have become part of the class of Leadership Kitsap 2008. This year’s class of 32 total participants formally graduated in a ceremony in Poulsbo at Kiana Lodge, June 24. Leadership Kitsap, a non-profit, volunteer organization, is a program that strives to promote the work of existing and emerging community leaders who will potentially become instrumental in creating positive changes throughout Kitsap County.

Command of SWFPAC changes

More than 400 family members, friends, guests and staff of Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific (SWFPAC) gathered outside SWFPAC headquarters at Naval Base Kitsap during a traditional change of command ceremony June 27. Capt. Charles S. LaSota turned over the reigns to Capt. Timothy J. Block during the ceremony. The principal speaker for the event was Rear Adm. Stephen E. Johnson, director of Strategic Systems Programs, who kicked off the ceremony with highlights of LaSota’s accomplishments as commanding officer.

Kitsap Sailors, Marines celebrate ‘Right Spirit Fair’

More than 250 Sailors, Marines and their families attended the 5th Annual Right Spirit Fair celebration at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor Fitness and Aquatic Center parking lot, June 26. The purpose of the Right Spirit Fair is to educate the public about the effects of drug use and alcohol abuse. To kick off the special celebration a “You Decide” drinking and driving seminar was held.

The Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Jackson Park Youth and Teen Center is running their ‘Up, Down All Around’ Youth Summer Camp for school age children through Aug. 29. The summer camp is offered to children of service members, DoD and civilian contractors, ages 6 to 12.

Stennis deemed outstanding in FEP

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) received an outstanding on their Final Evaluation Problem (FEP) June 16 when the crew demonstrated they could defend the ship and combat casualties in multiple, complex scenarios. FEP is a two-day, graded event that tests ships’ abilities to conduct combat missions, survive complex casualties and sustain support functions. “Stennis hit this one out of the park! The crew set their sights on FEP, with minimal preparation time and achieved a record score that will be extremely hard to beat,” said Stennis Executive Officer Cmdr. David Burnham. “This crew crushed every FEP score in recent carrier fleet history.”

Kitsap Sailors, Marines race for a cure

Sailors, Marines and the Kitsap community gathered at Central Kitsap High School for “Relay for Life,” a fund raising event for the American Cancer Society, June 21. Relay for Life, a 24-hour community event, raises funds for the American Cancer Society. The non-profit society founded in 1913 works to prevent and find a cure for cancer and helps those afflicted with various types of cancer. Sailors and Marines from Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor played their part by helping organizers set up the event.
