“Both Nebraska crews exemplified the spirit of teamwork with enthusiasm,” said Capt. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments.”
For Nebraska, the Battle “E” award announcement came on the same day that the boat’s Gold crew returned to Bangor after an 88-day strategic deterrent patrol.

Family members and friends braved a cold New Year’s night to greet the Trident ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) and its Gold crew as it returned to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor on Jan. 1 following an 88-day strategic deterrent patrol.
Capt. Paul Skarpness, commander of Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 17, was among those on hand as Nebraska — with a bright red lei draped over its sail — arrived pierside carrying the Gold crew, as well as a number of dependents who got to spend a few hours aboard during the transit to Bangor.
“We still have a lot of work to do, getting ready for our crew turnover, but it’s great to be home,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class (SS) Giancarlo Locandro after reuniting with his wife on the pier. “We did what we had to do out there.”

The Blue Crew of the Trident ballistic missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) was honored Dec. 16 by the commander of Submarine Group 9 for completing a 105-day strategic deterrent patrol — one of the longest patrols in recent history for a Bangor-based SSBN.
During morning quarters at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Rear Adm. Bob Hennegan expressed his appreciation to Maine’s Blue Crew, which returned home Dec. 4.
He also presented the Blue Crew with the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, awarded to Sailors who deploy away from their home port for at least 90 days.
“To all of you, congratulations for a tremendous job,” said Hennegan, who was also on hand Dec. 4 to welcome the Maine back to Bangor. “This is an amazing accomplishment.”

As the sun momentarily broke through the Pacific Northwest cloud cover, Sailors from the Trident ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada (SSBN 733) gathered Dec. 9 at a small cemetery in Bainbridge Island to honor the passing of not only a great naval officer, but also – in a way – a shipmate.
Seven Sailors from Nevada’s Blue Crew served as pallbearers during funeral services for retired Lt. Cmdr. Albert A. Arcand of Bainbridge Island, a World War II veteran of the battleship USS Nevada (BB 36) and Pearl Harbor survivor who passed away Dec. 3 at age 87.
The calm services stood in stark contrast to much of Arcand’s eventful life, and his time aboard Nevada was no exception.
Arcand began his Navy career as a radioman aboard Nevada and was present at Pearl Harbor on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Nevada and other ships moored on Battleship Row.

Before, after and especially during, Naval Hospital Bremerton’s OB/GYN Clinic and Northwest Beginnings Family Birthing Center provides a wide range of services for expectant eligible beneficiaries.
“We offer high quality patient and family centered care services,” said Lt. Cmdr April Scheunemann, NHB’s OB/GYN head. “Just as important, we have a understanding of the military family which is something our civilian counterparts do not. We know about Red Cross messages, about working with TRICARE and what it means to have a spouse on deployment.”
Last year, NHB averaged approximately 57 births per month, delivered by the board certified staff of Labor and Delivery. The OB/GYN clinic helped with many.
“Any patient can contact their primary care manager in Family Medicine and get a referral to OB/GYN within 72 hours,” said Scheunemann, adding that they can also call directly to schedule and enroll in prenatal care. The phone number to call to begin the process is (360) 475-4976.
