Newly selected Navy chief petty officers spent part of their Labor Day weekend participating in the 19th annual Blackberry Festival’s
five-kilometer run in Bremerton, Aug. 30.
Joined by about 100 chiefs, senior chiefs and master chiefs from throughout the region, approximately 75 chief selectees started after
the official run began and ran in formation singing cadence the entire way.

More than 50 spectators gathered at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Keyport pier to watch the 6th annual bathtub race, Aug. 30.
Bathtub racing started in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and involves the use of a bathtub boat; this year’s event drew 14 participants.
According to Margaret Johnson, event coordinator, bathtub racing has been around since 1967.

Lt. Sarah Pope and Lt. Kelly Koren of Naval Hospital Bremerton’s Puget Sound Family Medicine Residency program are taking their training where it has never gone before, the far side of the Pacific.
The two are forward deployed in support of Pacific Partnership 2008 on USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and just participated in humanitarian and civic assistance missions on Papua New Guinea (PNG) with the Federated States of Micronesia next on their itinerary, the final stop in support of Pacific Partnership 2008. Pacific Partnership 2008 brings together host and partner nation civilian and medical personnel and construction teams.

Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific (SWFPAC) held its third annual diversity fair at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Aug. 28.
Nearly a dozen booths were set up and ornamented to represent diverse countries, from Italy and China, to Germany.
Food samplings were also prepared for participants to enjoy free of charge.
“Today we are celebrating culture by providing samples of food from different countries,” said Kelsy Shaw, event coordinator.
“This brings commands together and we all can enjoy the festivities, and intermingle while enjoying some tasty samples.”

More than 100 United States Naval Sea Cadets graduated from basic and advance skills training during ceremonies held at the Fort Lewis Army post this weekend.
Families from United States and Canada were on hand to congratulate their sons and daughters in completing their Sea Cadet and Navy League Cadet summer training programs.
Cadets learned skills ranging from basic seamanship, to advance participation in field medical training with active and reserve components from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard, and with staff made up from volunteers and senior Sea Cadets.

The Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor Navy college office is making it easier for Sailors, Marines, and their dependents to get a college education.
According to Gerald Hert, NBK Bangor’s Navy college office director, resources and services are available to service members and their families to assist them in earning their college degrees.
“The sky is the limit here,” said Hert. “We offer DANTES and CLEP tests, as well as SAT and ACT testing and preparation. Students can also use the colleges that are available here to earn their degrees and they can either take classes online, in a classroom setting, or both, depending on what their needs are.

More than 100 children of military families from around the Pacific Northwest attended “Operation Purple,” a free summer camp at Island Lake Camp in Silverdale, Aug. 17-23.
The program, run and funded by the National Military Family Association (NMFA), aims to help military children experience carefree fun while also learning coping skills to deal with war-related stress and fostering relationships with others.

More than 50 children of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Sailors were sponsored by the Sierra Club and the YMCA to spend a week
at summer camp, learning values, team work and environment stewardship.
The kids spent the week at the YMCA of Tacoma-Pierce Countys’ Camp Seymour in Gig Harbor. The camp sits on 100 acres of
forest and beach front property and can accommodate several hundred campers a night. On average they have 180 campers a
week and extra day camps for 35 weeks a year. The camp offers a variety of activities for the kids to participate in, including
over-night camp outs, kayaking and canoeing, and hands on science programs.

“The back tire was just slowing to a stop. I could tell this had just happened.”
It was the evening of Saturday, August 9 when Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Frank Sandoval, Naval Hospital Bremerton staff member, came across the upside down Jeep off the shoulder of the freeway entrance from Trigger Avenue outside Naval Base Kitsap Bangor.
He instinctively knew he was the first person on the scene. His military training and experience immediately kicked in and he quickly parked his car and rushed to the driver’s rescue.

Service members and their families gathered at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor Tickets & Tours (ITT) Resource Center to celebrate the end of summer reading program, Aug. 22.
As part of the celebration, Scott Peterson, a zoologist known as “Reptile Man,” visited the base to showcase a variety of reptiles.
