Bangor galley adopts professional chef

The Trident Inn Galley on board Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor adopted a professional chef for the week of Sept. 8. Thomas Robley, a chef from Carlisle, Penn., was on hand during the week passing on his skills in the kitchen to culinary specialists working at the five-star accredited galley. “I like working with the young Sailors because they are hungry for knowledge,” said Robley. “They want to be taught. They want to learn new things; I can teach them things they don’t normally get to see and don’t do on a daily basis.” Robley was invited to participate in the Navy’s adopt-a-chef program since its beginning, and has had opportunities to share his experiences and knowledge with Sailors throughout the fleet.

Olympia Yacht Club hosts military appreciation day

More than 450 service members and civilians enjoyed a relaxing day of yachting, making new friends, and a traditional salmon feast during the 47th annual Foofaraw Military Appreciation Day, Sept. 5. Foofaraw, which is sponsored by the Olympia Yacht Club (OYC) and the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce, means “frills and flashy finery,” or “a disturbance or to-do over a trifle,” and was started as a way to show military members stationed in the Puget Sound that they are a valued and vital part of the community. “It’s grown from a few boats to 40, in the past 20-plus years that I have been doing this,” said Bob Job, OYC past commodore, retired Chief Electrician’s Mate, and skipper of the 48-foot yacht, the Explorer II. “The smile on everyone’s face when they are walking off the boat and heading back to their duty stations: that is what makes this all worthwhile.”

From one side of the Pacific to another, Lt. Kelly Koren, Naval Hospital Bremerton third year Family Medicine resident, has represented her command before, but never like this. Sarah Pope, joined the mission on board USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) in time for PNG. “Kelly is one of our chief residents this year and showed a strong interest,” said Cmdr. David Congdon, Medical Corps, USN, and program director of NHB’s Puget Sound Family Medicine Residency Program. Koren, who last year won the resident research competition at the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physician’s annual Scientific Assembly in Portland, Ore. is finding that engaging in MEDCAP duties this year expanded her range of patient care as a Family Medicine Resident/Primary Care Physician.
