The officers and crew of USS Alaska (SSBN 732 BLUE) were awarded the DUI free for 12 months award at a ceremony held recently.

“We were pleased to learn that we had achieved this significant milestone which we had set as a goal.  It is always nice to be able to show to the crew that their efforts are recognized and appreciated. It truly is an award for the crew. Responsible driving is something that they took on board, embraced and accomplished by looking out for each other while at work and more importantly while on liberty and leave,” said Cmdr. Robert James, commanding officer.

To attain this goal the officers and crew of Alaska (BLUE) worked on all fronts to stress the importance of this issue and the true complete costs (i.e. professional, social, personal and legal consequences) associated with receiving a DUI.

According to Master Chief Missile Technician (SS) David Smith, chief of the boat, he hopes this recognition will leave a lasting impression on each Sailor.

“I think this will help the crew realize that this is an important aspect of their job as a Sailor and citizen.  It is important that the crew understands that if you drink, you don’t drive. The local area has enough Navy programs available to provide Sailors an alternate option to drinking and driving. If you have any other philosophy, you are a potential threat to yourself and others.”

With 2005 in full swing, they are pressing on and making sure they get another award like this one in 2006.

“The crew is proud to know that they have accomplished something that few other boats have done and something that is truly important. I think this will help to solidify the positive momentum that has been made. I hope it becomes one additional item that people consider when planning their leave and liberty and that it becomes a success that no one in the team will want to break,” said Lt. Cmdr. Mark Behning, executive officer.
