Bangor submariners raise scholarship funds at annual gala

More than 450 Sailors and their family members attended the annual Silver and Gold Charity Auction “A Knight to Remember” at the Naval Base Kitsap Bangor Plaza, March 15.
“The Silver and Gold Charity Auction is an event we hold each year to help raise funds for the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation,” said Deanna Gummer, event coordinator. “Service members from around the region have donated many items displayed at our charity event and we appreciate their continuous support. Our goal is to break last year’s record of $19,000 in contributions for scholarships.”
The event began with a silent auction where various items from spa certificates to an assortment of gift baskets to tickets for trips and tours were displayed on rows of tables for bidders.
Guests dressed up in medieval attire as they roamed the rooms filled with thousands of items on display for auction. Items were donated by 32 commands around the region and by several businesses in Kitsap County.
“Traditionally, submarine force leaders and their guests get together to enjoy an evening of fun and to share a sense of community in support of very worthy causes: The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation and other local charities,” said Rear Adm. Timothy Giardina, commander, Submarine Group Trident. “I would like to thank the Silver and Gold charity auction committee members and the Bangor Officer Spouses Association members for making this event possible.”
The purpose of the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is to provide financial assistance to the children of Navy submariners and Navy members who serve in support of the submarine community.
“Since 1961, the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation has been awarding scholarships to sons and daughters of submariners who need financial assistance for college,” said retired Capt. Michael Oliver. “We are here to help secure higher education for more of our submarine force children.”
After dinner, the floor was open for the verbal auction.
“I would like to thank everyone who participated in this event,” said Capt. Chas Richard, commodore, Submarine Squadron 17. “The scholarship makes a difference in the lives of so many students and also for our local charities.”
