Service members and their families gathered at the Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) Bangor Tickets & Tours (ITT) Resource Center to
celebrate the end of summer reading program, Aug. 22.
As part of the celebration, Scott Peterson, a zoologist known as “Reptile Man,” visited the base to showcase a variety of reptiles.
“Today is the last day for our summer reading program, and each year we put something together for the children as a reward
for being part of the program,” said Monica Johnson, event coordinator. “This year we have the Reptile Man present to teach
children about different reptiles.”
Before reptiles were displayed, each child who participated in the summer reading program received a certificate and a prize
as an incentive for being part of the program.
“This year, the summer reading program was a success, with more than 100 children participating,” said Johnson. “We encourage
parents to enroll children in this program because it’s very educational and we want to show kids that reading is a fun thing.”
Peterson showcased numerous reptiles from lizards, turtles, and a variety of snakes as children observed with excitement.
“All the reptiles I have here today have been raised by people,” said Peterson. “I studied animals in college and I am passionate
about educating the public about these amazing reptiles.”
Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) funded and sponsored the event. Army Staff Sgt. Bernard Johnson said the event was a
way for his children to learn something new.
“I think the reading program is a great program for my children because they continually learn something new,” said Johnson.
“This event gives them a chance to see actual animals and reptiles they read about in books. They get to see and do things on
hands and realize what they read about is real.”
For one Sailor, the program is a way to keep children productive during summer days.
“The summer reading program is a great way to keep the kids busy and it broadens their minds about different animals and what
mother nature is all about,” said Storekeeper 2nd Class (SW/AW) Patrick Griffin, USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).
“My children are so excited to see and learn about the reptiles and I think it’s great the base offers fun, free programs like this.”
