Renee Cantrell and her daughter, Angela, rent gear from Pacific Edge Outfitters (PEO) for a weekend camping trip at Illahee State Park. PEO is an outdoor shop that rents and sells gear to Sailors and their families.

Pacific Edge Outfitters (PEO) on Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor provides discounts, rentals and outdoor vacation trips to provide an opportunity for Sailors to widen their horizons.

“Outdoor activities, such as backpacking and mountain biking, are great for those who could never get into team sports,” said Ed Dunning, NBK recreation director.  “For sports like softball or basketball, you need to get a group of 20 people together to play a decent game. With most of our activities, having a partner with you in case something happens is all you need.  Plus team sports have seasons, but with hiking a trail, many do that year round.”

PEO has information on outdoor activities to help Sailors plan their vacation, including tapes, maps, guidebooks, brochures and gear lists. The staff is also available to assist Sailors in choosing appropriate vacations.

“Our main mission is to provide outdoor rentals,” said Dunning.  “I see most outdoor activities as a way to stay fit and have fun.  If you run on the road it’s working out, but if you run on a trail it’s having fun while staying fit. It’s the same with biking and just about anything else.”

PEO has powerboats, canoes, kayaks, mountain bikes, camping and backpacking gear, travel trailers, party canopies, tables, and chairs for rent.  Renee Cantrell took her family camping at the Illahee State Park and rented their ice chests, sleeping bags, and tents from PEO.

“It was very easy to rent from Pacific Edge,” said Cantrell.  “I felt more confident and safer because only military members can use the gear.  The staff there was very friendly and courteous, too. They actually pointed out the sleeping bags I grabbed werenít right for the weather weíd be having, so we switched bags.”

For the more avid outdoorsman, PEO also sells gear, such as sleeping bags, backpacks, winter and summer clothes, and even kayaks.

“We stress quality and value and all merchandise is name brand,” said Dunning. “If the Sailor is looking for an extremely high-end product, we probably won’t have it, but can point them in the right direction. On the other hand, if they are looking for a generic product for something simple, we won’t have it, but we can still point them in the right direction.” PEO also provides discount lift ticket, lesson and rental vouchers, and ferry tickets. Vouchers include Mount Baker, Crystal Mountain, Stevens Pass, The Summit at Snoqualmie, Mission Ridge, and Whistler Blackcomb.

“We cater to Sailors’ personal interest,” said Joshua Powell, PEO recreation aid and advisor. “We had a guy come in here the other day and we talked about ice climbing for like two hours.  We offer more than other places that only have TVs and videogames.”

PEO offers a storage lot as well. The lot is available for boat and travel trailers.

They also offer outdoor trips through Community programs. Sailors can register for trips through the Internet and also Ticket and Tours office.

“We just got to the area so we havenít taken a trip yet, but we are signed up for the Vancouver trip coming up,” said Cantrell. “We’re really excited and signing up for it was an easy process.”

For information call PEO at (360) 535-5919.  They are located next to the Auto Hobby Shop, and open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
