Silverdale woman’s recipe takes her to TV

Kristine Hughes-Tibbs from Trident Training Facility on Naval Base Kitsap represented Silverdale during the KCTS Television’s 20th viewer cooking special, “KCTS Cooks: Favorite Recipes,” Nov. 6 when she whipped up her specialty, “Kris’ Ramekin au Gratin Potatoes,” on live TV.
The new special features a wide variety of recipes for entrees, desserts and more were all submitted by KCTS viewers including Hughes-Tibbs.
“I love cooking shows and I submitted a recipe, just to do it,” she said.
Hughes-Tibbs’ potatoes are actually something that began as an experiment. She says she made them last New Year’s Eve for a party and they were gone within minutes.
She has since made them a few more times to get the recipe down because she said when she first made them she just added ingredients as she went and had to remember what she initially used in the recipe.
“I made it up as I went, it was one of those flukes,” she said. “It was an experiment, I never expected to have to remember the assembly.”
All of the recipes demonstrated on the show will be put into the “KCTS Cooks: Favorite Recipes” cookbook. Not only will all recipes demonstrated be included in the book, but also 250 additional recipes that were submitted by viewers in Washington and Canada.
“Kris has contributed great recipes for several of our cooking shows, we’ve had our eye on her,” said Paula Nemzek, KCTS co-producer. “This recipe captured out attention because it’s a fairly easy, yet elegant, potato recipe that can be dressed up or down for the occasion.”
Hughes-Tibbs is proud of her recipe and the opportunity to display her talents on TV.
“I was excited about being with other cooks and meeting other chefs. I don’t know if I could do it for a living, but I love to cook,” Hughes-Tibbs said. “I’m one of those people who say, ‘Get out of my kitchen, I’m cooking.’”
She says she grew with a mom who was a really good cook and says she watched and learned and now all she has to do is watch something being made and she can remember it.
“My favorite thing to cook is prime rib, I love it, Hughes-Tibbs said. “It always comes out right.”
Hughes-Tibbs added that the best part about cooking is the end result.
“My favorite thing about cooking is when people sit down to eat and I see their reactions to what I made for them.”
