St. Paddy’s Day Fun Run at Jackson Park

Participants in the St. Paddy's 5k Fun Run hit the finish line at the Jackson Park waterfront.

Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) held one-mile and 5K St. Paddy’s Day Fun Run March 15, to encourage physical fitness for active duty military personnel, their families and DoD employees.

The fun run was a Captain’s Cup event, in which participating commands could earn points to their overall score.

“This is not a race, that is why it’s called a fun run,” said Lisa Bertolacci, NBK fitness manager. “It’s something that people can take part in. You just sign up, go do it and have fun, even if you just have to walk the mile, you did something.”

“These events are for the active duty military families, retirees, and our DoD employees, and is to help them get out and enjoy the exercise,” said Steve Watland, NBK Kitsap fitness manager. “This particular one, because it was held at Jackson Park, was open to civilians as well since there is no access needed, unlike military installations. The participation at all our events keeps increasing since the category for children 17 and under became free.”

For one submariner, who had never participated in the St. Paddy’s Day fun run before, it was an event well worth his time and energy.

“This is my first time participating in this event” said Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class (SS) Gavin Stewa, USS Alabama (SSBN 731). “I felt pretty good doing this, although I haven’t run something like this in about two years. I definitely plan on being part of this next year. It was a really positive environment and I liked it a lot.”

Awards were presented to the top place finishers of each division. The next Captain’s Cup event will be the Submarine Anniversary Run April 12.
