Sailors from the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) show students from North Kitsap High School the proper way to pass the flag during a ceremonial demonstration in the school auditorium.

Volunteers from USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) performed a flag passing ceremony and spoke to students about the history and significance of the U.S. flag at North Kitsap High School’s auditorium March 18.

Lydia Rush, a student mentor, arranged the ceremony to educate her peers about the national Ensign.

“I wanted our kids to be shown proper flag etiquette,” said Rush. “We as mentors try to provide influential guest speakers which helps prepare the students for the real world.  I thought this ceremony would provide a good overview of our nation’s flag.”

Chief Quartermaster (SW/AW) Edward Lawson, community service coordinator, gave an introductory speech to dozens of students prior to the ceremony. Lawson outlined the significance of the flag passing ceremony and talked about the history of the U.S. flag.

Eight Stennis Sailors formed a line on stage, which began with the most junior Sailor passing the folded flag up the line until it reached the most senior Sailor. At the same time, Lawson recited a poem about Old Glory, which is another name for the U.S. flag.

“It’s a good thing for kids to understand more about the flag,” said Lawson. “Hopefully this ceremony instilled some pride.  This could determine if they want to join the service, so that’s why we’re also here to answer questions about the service.”

The most junior Sailor in the line, Quartermaster Seaman Recruit Kurtis Rodgers, Navigation, said he volunteered to show students what the Navy’s all about.

“This ceremony showed them what they can do in the Navy,” said Rodgers. “I can relate to these students. I just got out of high school eight months ago.  I hope this ceremony gave them a patriotic feeling.”

Afterward, Seaman Amanda Jenkins took the stage to ask the students questions about the flag. Students who answered correctly were awarded coupons for free pizza.

To conclude the ceremony, Lawson described the different ranks and what certain symbols on the uniform represented, and he answered questions from the students.
