NAS Whidbey top civilians selected

Making NAS Whidbey Island a better place to live, work and play leads to five civilian employees receiving awards from Capt. Gerral David, air station commanding officer.

During a recent Captain’s Call for NAS Whidbey Island civilians at the CPO Club, David called up Robert Zimmerman and Jim Smith to personally thank them for doing such good work, to keep them abreast of current activities on the base and answer their questions on a myriad of subjects.

Zimmerman, who works as a social services assistant at the Nor’wester Activity Center, was named 2007 Civilian Employee of the Year.

His supervisor David White, Chief of Clinical Services and Family Advocacy Representative, said, “Bob consistently finds ways to work smarter. He streamlined record archiving and record maintenance procedures.”

When asked what traits make a good employee, Zimmerman said, “Be dedicated to the mission and be flexible with changing priorities.” He earned a cash award of $500.

Smith was chosen 2007 Civilian Supervisor of the Year. As the Gallery Golf Course Superintendent, Smith oversees the maintenance of over 200 acres with a crew of eight during the golf season and two in the winter.

“I believe a good manager builds a team and uses their strengths to accomplish goals,” said Smith. “Customers are the reason we do what we do. As with any business, we want to meet their demands and make their experience the best it can be.”
