Navy Region Northwest shore-based Navy College offices will reinstate their Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), General Educational Development (GED), SAT and ACT testing, May 1. All DANTES exams were suspended Feb. 29 due to a suspected compromise of testing material on four Navy ships and at one shore command.

From May to November 2005, the more than 5,000 member crew of the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) was augmented by a massive film team for their underway deployment.
This team focused not on the operations of the ship, but instead on the daily lives of the Sailors and the way they performed their demanding jobs at sea. This remarkable footage was recorded for presentation on the Public Broadcast System (PBS).

Navy Region Northwest hosted a series of briefs throughout the Northwest by the Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center (ECRC), April 15-17.
The first of many briefs to the fleet was held at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor to help dispel misconceptions about the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) Support Assignments (GSA) and Individual Aaugmentee (IA) process. ECRC commanding officer Capt. Jeffrey McKenzie and Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Kelly Schneider spoke about IA Sailors and the process they go through, GSAs, family support and what the ECRC brings to the support team.

Last week, the Northwest Navigator was selected as the top “metro category” Navy newspaper, taking first place in the annual Chief of Naval Information (CHINFO) Merit Awards. The Navigator will now represent the Navy in the Department of Defense Thomas Jefferson Awards against first place Army and Air Force winners.

Charles Sorci never returned from the Philippines and Japan after World War II. Physically he returned but in most other ways, Charles Sorci wasn’t the same.
Sorci’s widow, Bonnie Sorci, was one of the keynote speakers at the annual commemoration of the Bataan Death March Saturday at Bataan Park in East Bremerton.
Her husband enlisted in the Army in Pittston, Pa., after quitting school to work in the coal mines with his father, she said. His coal miner career lasted all of one night as he returned to school before enlisting shortly afterwards.

It might seem far-out and even far-fetched, but there is the possibility of far-reaching impact. Several times a week, yoga classes are offered at Naval Hospital Bremerton for staff members, with additional classes also available for eligible beneficiaries. Lt. Fouad Elzaatari is one of the teachers at NHB, and is a walking embodiment of yoga enthusiasm. Elzaatari’s classes are not bulging at the seams. Yet. But the word is spreading.

Sometimes a big loser can also be a big winner. Such was the case at the awards ceremony for Naval Base Kitsap Fitness Center’s 2008 Biggest Loser program on March 31.
The 12-week program is for service members, retirees, family members and Department of Defense civilian employees to assist them in developing a healthy lifestyle in addition to overall weight loss.

For the vast majority of Sailors and their families, moving all over the world every several years is something to be coped with, with love, support, and all of the assistance that the Navy can provide. Fortunately, the Navy’s Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) is there to help with programs such as the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP).

Navy Region Northwest greeted the captain and crew of the Peruvian Navy transport ship BAP Mollendo (ATC 131), April 3, with a welcoming ceremony at Pier 66 on Elliott Bay, Seattle.
Mollendo was in Seattle for a four-day port visit. The ship, commanded by Capitan de Fragata, Gonzolo Carrera Mazuelos, has a crew of 134 enlisted and 28 officers.
During their visit the crew toured the Everett home ported USS Ford (FFG 54) at Naval Station Everett, and visited Boeing airfields, as well as Microsoft headquarters in Redmond.
The crew also toured famous Seattle sites, such as the Space Needle, the Seattle Aquarium, and Pike’s Place Market.

Guided-missile cruiser USS Port Royal (CG 73), guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) and guided-missile frigate USS Ingraham (FFG 61) “set sail” concluding a successful port visit to Phuket, Thailand, April 7.
While in port, Sailors had the chance to meet local citizens, experience local customs and traditions, and enjoy the many recreational activities offered in Phuket. For a few Sailors, however, rest and recreation were not the only activities on the schedule.
On April 4, Sailors from Port Royal and Ingraham volunteered for a special project with Kamala Elementary School in Phuket, which provides high-quality English language education to local children. The school was one of countless buildings destroyed in 2004 when a tsunami demolished most of Patong Beach.
