Navy’s big band ‘Cascade’ tours and teaches

Navy Band Northwest’s Big Band “Cascade” hit the road this fall with a community relations and outreach mission. The tour-itinerary brought the band to many new places in the Pacific-Northwest that had not previously seen a Sailor, let alone a Navy band. With the generous support of the region, Cascade represented Rear Adm. Douglass Biesel, commander, Navy Region Northwest, and the entire Navy in several Washington and Oregon cities and schools. The band swung its way through cities from Salem, Ore. to Walla-Walla, Wash.. Playing seven concerts in seven cities for audiences totaling more than 5,000, Cascade brought live big band jazz to the Northwest, and also taught it in the classroom. In addition to the band’s nightly public performances, they booked time during the days to visit local high-schools and middle-schools, offering clinics to students in music programs.

TIPS FROM NAVY LEGAL Protecting your credit

With the state of the current economy, it is increasingly important that your credit record is protected. A quick and easy way to keep track of your credit is to request free copies of your consumer credit reports. Credit bureaus keep track of the payment records of every person issued credit. This includes holders of credit cards, car loans, home loans, and sometimes apartment leases. Businesses use these records, which are stored in national data bases, to determine whether you should be issued credit. There are three major credit bureaus, Equifax (1-800-685-1111, http://www.equifax.com), Experian (1-888-397-3742, http://www.experian.com), and Trans Union (1-800-916-8800, http://www.tuc.com) that keep track of credit ratings. You are entitled to receive one free credit report from each of the reporting bureaus that can be obtained online (http://www.annualcreditreport.com) or through mailing in your request. If you are denied credit, you can also request a free credit report within 60 days of the denial. Additionally, The Fair Credit Reporting Act, a federal statute, provides consumers protection from credit reporting agencies. Consumers have the right to request that inaccurate or incomplete information on a credit report be changed. If this does not work, you have the right to request, in writing, an investigation into the validity of the information.

Pacific Beach hosts reunion for NFPB veterans

Today the Pacific Beach Resort and Conference Center is a great getaway for military personnel to relax and enjoy the ocean. But from 1957 to 1987 it served as Naval Facility Pacific Beach (NFPB), a key component in the Navy’s ability to monitor ship movements in the Northern Pacific. Throughout those years the mission was considered sensitive and many of the Sailors who served at Pacific Beach moved on to other commands and duty stations. Much of the history of the facility was carried in the hearts of minds of these Sailors, but was not documented, discussed with families, or cited as the basis for awards and commendations. Every three years NFPB Sailors are invited to return to Pacific Beach for a reunion held in their honor. It is an opportunity to talk with shipmates and relive some of the good times spent at the Naval Facility.

Domestic violence and your pets

October is domestic violence awareness month. While men, women and children suffer from domestic violence at the hands of their abusers, so can the beloved family pet (s). Pets are not immune to domestic violence. Abusers will exert power and control over their victim by threatening to injure, harm or kill their pet. One of the obstacles that a victim faces when trying to leave an abusive situation is the safety of their pet at the hands of the abuser. The abuser may harm the pet in order to punish the victim from leaving or in an attempt to force them to return to the relationship. Washington State has revised the laws regarding domestic violence. It will now protect the family pet in a petition for an order of protection. These new changes in the law can offer the victim the reassurance for the safety of their pet. It can also give them the help they may need to leave an abusive relationship. Now victims of domestic violence will not have to make a choice between their safety and the safety of their beloved pets.
