SWCC provides demonstrations for recruitment

Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC) from San Diego provided demonstrations and boat rides to help recruit new members to the special warfare community at the 101st annual Portland Rose Festival, June 7. SWCC teams are required to use a combination of specialized training in navigation, radio communications, engineering, weapons, parachuting, first aid and tactics in completion of special operation missions worldwide. The SWCC crews explained their mission and showed off what their Naval Special Warfare Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) could do to local civic and industry leaders who passed by their dock as a way to help Portland natives understand what the special warfare mission is all about.

Sailors smell roses at annual Oregon floral parade

More than 100 veterans and service members of all branches of the military marched in the 101st annual Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade June 7. For more than 100 years, the spectacle of the city’s Grand Floral Parade has defined the Portland Rose Festival as one of the world’s great celebrations and is the main highlight of the festival. The USS Preble (DDG 88) color guard drill team marched down the streets holding American flags with pride during the parade as thousands lined the streets of downtown Portland in anticipation of the largest single-day spectator event in Oregon.

First HSM squadron embarks Stennis

Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71, a new component to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, is the first squadron of its kind to embark a carrier as part of an air wing. Their mission is to employ the Navy’s most technologically sophisticated rotary aircraft in the fleet to carry out the objectives of strike group commanders, their weapon is the MH-60R Seahawk. “It feels great. The whole air wing and ship have really come together smoothly; the espirit de corp has been great, and we’re just happy to be a part of it,” said HSM-71 commanding officer, Cmdr. Michael Nortier.

Hospital Corpsman bound for Laos

The rugged mountainous terrain, isolated narrow valleys, and unforgiving jungle canopy of Laos have long remained hidden from much of the outside world. Hospital Corpsman Chief Robert Ripps of Naval Hospital Bremerton will soon be traveling there to help search for those long lost, but never forgotten. Ripps will join Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command as part of Recovery Operation Laos. It’s a daunting task and one he is steadfast to undertake.

Navy welcomes Growler ERA to Whidbey

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island ushered in the next generation of naval electronic attack aircraft with the official arrival of its first EA-18G Growler, June 3. The event marks the beginning of the long awaited transition to the Growler from the Vietnam-era EA-6B Prowler. Presiding over the event were the Honorable Donald Winter, Secretary of the Navy; Jim Albaugh, executive vice president of The Boeing Company; U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen; Capt. Bradley Russell, commodore of Electronic Attack Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CVWP); and Oak Harbor Mayor Jim Slowik.

Memorial honors fallen Northwest IA

More than 1,200 Sailors and guests attended the Commander, Navy Region Northwest memorial, June 4, at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, to honor a fallen Northwest Sailor. Lt. Jeffrey Ammon, 37, was killed in an improvised explosive device attack in the Aband district of Afghanistan, May 20. Rear Adm. James Symonds, commander, Navy Region Northwest said during the memorial that peace does not preserve itself and that freedom isn’t free, and added that the work of building a better tomorrow for all humanity entails sacrifice.

Portland Rose Festival fleet ready for annual festivities

This year’s Portland Rose Festival fleet arrived in the City of Roses June 5 for the annual festivites. The Navy, Coast Guard and Canadian ships will visit Portland from June 5-9. One U.S. Navy cruiser, two destroyers, and a frigate will moor along the Portland waterfront and offer public tours throughout their stay. The ships are USS Lake Champlain (CG 57); USS Kidd (DDG 100); USS Preble (DDG 88); and USS Gary (FFG 51).

Memorial set for fallen IA Sailor

A memorial service for Lt. Jeffrey Ammon has been set for June 4 at 2 p.m. on board Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor. Ammon, 37, was killed in an improvised explosive device attack in the Aband district of Afghanistan May 20. The Ammon family would like the memorial service to remain private and, as such, media and the general public are not invited to attend the service.

IA Sailors share experiences at ‘Warrior Workshop’

Sailors preparing for, and returning from, individual augmentee (IA) assignments got the opportunity to speak with counselors and share their experiences at a Warriors Workshop, May 23. Warriors Workshop is comprised of two portions, including a pre-deployment brief to prepare the Sailors for experiences they may face and a post-deployment brief to show resources to help when they return from their deployment.

Critical Days of Summer awareness stressed at NHB

Happy Hammock Harry didn’t say much, but then he didn’t have to. His role was simply as an advisor to aid Naval Hospital Bremerton’s Safety and Health Promotion divisions increase awareness on a number of issues for the Critical Day of Summer campaign. “We normally put the word out about summer safety via the Plan of the Day, but Health Promotion asked us (Safety) to help them put together several presentations to increase people’s knowledge,” said Mike Kelly, NHB Safety. “Our goal is to try and increase everyone’s safety awareness during the 101 days of summer.”
