Navy Band highlights Torchlight Parade

Navy Band Northwest participated in the 59th annual Seattle Seafair Torchlight Parade, July 26. The Torchlight Parade, one of the highlights of Seafair festivities, is a 2.5 mile trek along 4th Ave. in the heart of the city. It consisted of countless floats, balloons and a variety of marching bands. Hundreds of people lined the street to catch a glimpse of the festivities.

CVW 2 pilots Call Signs can come from physical attributes, awkward moments

During every pilot and naval flight officer’s career they get to experience one of the Navy’s lighter traditions, the giving and receiving of call signs. According to tradition, only pilots and other officers within their squadron can give someone a call sign, and are thereafter known throughout that community by that name. Lt. Michael “Pony Boy” Apone assigned to the “Fighting Vigilantes” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 151, which is part of Carrier Air Wing 2 and embarked aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), said there are several factors that can lead to a naming, the most common method being a play on the person’s name.

Lincoln Sailors rock their shipmates

Five Sailors aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) formed a band, they call “Death by Chicken,” to help relieve stress, have fun and further their musical skills while deployed to the Arabian Sea supporting Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. “We play all genres,” said Operations Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Stefan Tillman from Training Department, lead guitarist. “We want to play a little to cater to most listeners out there. Some rock, some metal, some alternative, some country, mellow rock — a blend to please the majority.”

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) nominated Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) Pacific Northwest as an OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) “Star” site July 11. The VPP Star program recognizes organizations that have comprehensive safety and health management systems and a robust commitment from labor, management and employees to continuous, cooperative safety relationships in the workplace.

Navy leads way in funding on marine mammals

The Navy is leading the United States in funding research to determine the effects of sound on marine mammals, according to Rear Adm. Frank M. Drennan, commander, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command. Speaking to business and senior military leaders at a recent San Diego Military Advisory Council’s monthly breakfast meeting, Drennan explained the Navy is funding $26 million this year alone.

Hospital security rescues two capsized canoeists

Master at Arms Seaman Paul Wilson of Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) celebrated his 19th birthday on Sunday by giving the gift of life to others in dire need. The quick thinking and quicker acting Wilson swam to the rescue of two elderly people who had capsized their canoe in the cold waters of Puget Sound. “If Wilson had not gone ahead and immediately helped out, the situation could have definitely turned out to be much worse,” said MA2 (SW/AW) Roberto Colon, NHB security watch captain, who along with Wilson, was on duty on Sunday when the need for water-borne rescue unfolded.

Navy chaplains gather at Bangor to strengthen ministry skills

Twenty active and reserve U.S. Navy chaplains attended a workshop at the Bangor Chapel, July 9-10, to strengthen their ministry knowledge and skills. The goal of the workshop, titled the “Region Northwest Active and Reserve Ministry Workshop,” was to integrate the active and reserve chaplains as a step toward a more unified Navy. “Our efforts were to make sure we had a blend,” said Capt. Ronald Wells, deputy Navy Region Northwest chaplain and one of the event’s coordinators.

Two Lancers selected for the Blue Angels

Two second class petty officers from the combat-proven Lancers of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 131 were selected to be a part of the Blue Angels flight demonstration team for 2009. Most of the selectees for the team had a background of working with the F/A18 Hornet. Aviation Electronics Technician (AW) 2nd Class Meredith Ansley and Aviation Machinist’s Mate (AW) 2nd Class Zackary Gruwell were the only selections from the EA-6B Prowler community.

Who is the father of the Navy?

After the sound of exploding fireworks have faded, and the last 4th of July hotdog eaten, it is worthwhile to remember the Navy’s role in the War for Independence. America’s first unified Navy was formed in 1775, at the beginning of the American Revolution. Two particular officers helped establish America as a powerful force at sea: Commodore John Barry and Capt. John Paul Jones. Barry and Jones were both fearless captains in the Continental Navy. Each man had a passion for victory that was seen in bold strategic moves and a refusal to accept defeat. To this day, however, a mild controversy surrounds Barry and Jones. Which man is truly the Father of the Navy?
