When you feel an earthquake, drop under a desk or sturdy table. Stay away from windows, bookcases, file cabinets, heavy mirrors, hanging plants, and other objects that could fall. Watch for falling plaster or ceiling tiles. Stay under cover until the shaking stops. Hold onto a desk or table. If it moves, move with it. Here are some additional tips for specific locations:

As Ombudsman for my husband’s command I have the opportunity speak at each session of School of the Ship (orientation). I start each class with one question, “Before seeing ‘Ombudsman’ on the class schedule, how many of you have heard of the Command Ombudsman?” Less than ten percent of attendees have heard of the Navy Family Command Ombudsman.

The CNO annually confers environmental quality awards on Navy personnel, ships, and shore activities in recognition of outstanding performance in protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment. Competition categories include natural resources conservation, cultural resources management, environmental quality, pollution prevention, environmental restoration, and environmental planning. Throughout the Navy, 28 winners have been selected for the 2004 Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Awards competition, sponsored by the CNO Environmental Readiness Division.
