USS Abe Lincoln receives SECDEF maintenance award, eyes Phoenix

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) has received the Department of Defense (DoD) maintenance award for fiscal year 2003. The ship was the only Navy command to receive the honor, one of six given by the DoD to military commands worldwide. The award puts the West Coast carrier in contention for the DoD Phoenix Award, the top annual award in the maintenance competition. The report cited FY ‘03 statistics and information on Abe’s mission accomplishments, effective use of maintenance resources, management innovations, and personnel quality of life programs. Though Abe AIMD leadership penned the award submission, they’re the first to say the award is much more than just their department.

Destroyer Dale rang up 12 battle stars in World War II Pacific

The fourth ship to be named Dale and the lead ship of a new class of destroyers, DD-353, was built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and was commissioned June 17, 1935 with Cmdr. W.A. Corn as its first commanding officer.

Navy Band Northwest in the spotlight

With the fall season upon us, the Navy Band Northwest is gearing up for their fall concert series, which begins Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m. with a variety show at the Naval Undersea Museum-Keyport. In November, the band will perform an All Hands Band concert Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Keyport as well. Each show they perform out in the community is free and open to the public.
