Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) hosted their annual job fair Oct. 14-15 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

On hand were current management and apprentice personnel, security specialists and physical qualification representatives involved in recruiting qualified future employees.

“We’ve had job fairs at the fairgrounds for the past seven years and it’s a great way for people to come out and see what we’re all about,” said Bryan Watland, apprentice program administrator and job fair coordinator. “Most people have no idea what goes on at PSNS and IMF. They just see what they can see from outside the fence. It’s kind of like ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ But these fairs give people interested a no pressure opportunity to come out and see what we do.”

PSNS and IMF representatives attended the fair in search of 400 qualified applicants in 28 different trades that included production, radiological control and apprenticeship programs.

“I encouraged applicants to come prepared with transcripts and resumes after researching available positions on our Web site,” said Watland.

He added that the job fair further provided visitors a chance to talk to managers and first year apprentices, while exploring their interests and gathering more information.

On the day following the job fair, placement tests were given to nearly 500 applicants. Qualified applicants were given the opportunity to prepare for the tests through a number of workshops provided throughout the job fair weekend.

To apply for a position at PSNS and IMF, applicants must be U.S. citizens over the age of 18 and able to pass security and physical fitness screenings.
