The Seattle Mariners hosted a military appreciation night at Safeco Field Aug. 1, as part of festivities during Seattle’s Seafair.
Service members were treated to an early opening of the ballpark, watched the Mariners warm up before their game against
the Baltimore Orioles, and had memorabilia autographed by team members.
“It’s incredible for us to have the military come out to watch us play tonight,” said Mariners pitcher Brandon Morrow. “We have
a great appreciation for what you guys do for us and our country, and it’s a tremendous feeling to have you guys out here
watching us.”
Military members were also treated to a free concert, food, and beverages prior to the start of the game.
“I think it is nice of the Mariners to show their appreciation for us in this way,” said Chief Intelligence Specialist (SW/AW)
Heather Strow of Commander, 3rd Fleet.
“They put on a nice welcome for the Sailors, and Seattle has been very welcoming towards everyone. This is a big deal for
the Sailors. It’s nice that they do something special and the people on the ships can come out here and experience this.”
The Navy Band Northwest Quartet had the honor of singing the national anthem. Gas Turbine System Technician (Mechanical)
1st Class (SW) Ananais Williams, Sailor of the Quarter for the guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59), and Chief (sel)
Yeoman Adrianne Sanders, Sailor of the Year for the Whidbey Island-class amphibious dock landing ship USS Georgetown
(LSD 42), each had the honors of throwing out the first pitches of the game.
“I am so honored to be able to throw out the first pitch,” said Sanders. “I’m speechless.”
The Mariners showed gratitude for the men and women in uniform.
“We are very thankful for what the men and women in uniform do,” said Morrow. “On behalf of the Mariners and myself I
want to thank you guys. Thank you for what you are doing. I look up to you guys and I have a great appreciation for what
you do.”
Seafair is a month-long event sponsored by the city of Seattle. During the last week of Seafair, the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard,
and Canadian Navy participate in the event, where ships are available for public tours. Military members, their families, and
the general public can attend an air show featuring the Blue Angels, as well as watch hydroplane races.
