With school starting soon, the Oak Harbor school buses will hit the road Sept. 4 and the rush is on for school clothes and supplies.
To prepare for the new school year, NAS Whidbey Island is reuniting with the Oak Harbor School District for the 17th year to join forces in the Partnership in Education program. This program is strongly supported by Navy leadership and volunteers alike, especially since 55 percent of students in the school district come from either military or federally-employed families.

The Maj. Megan McClung Memorial Run, hosted by Marine Aviation Training Support Group (MATSG) 53, Aug. 23, attracted 168 competitors in its second year on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
The five and 10-kilometer run is in memorial of McClung, of Coupeville, Wash., who died Dec. 6, 2006 in Ramadi, Iraq, and was the first female Marine Corps officer to be killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was an avid marathon runner and six-time Ironman competitor.

Fleet Readiness Center Northwest (FRCNW) was recently named one of two winners of the 2008 Department of Defense Maintenance Award for medium category commands.
FRCNW, formerly know as the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department, is one of the Navy’s largest aviation maintenance repair activities on the West coast, employing almost 1,000 Sailors, Marines, and Civilians. The unit supports intermediate and depot level maintenance for EA-6B Prowler, P-3C Orion, EP-3E Aries, and H-60 Knighthawk aircraft components.

On a sweltering day in the Horn of Africa, a small school in the nation of Djibouti received a day of pampering courtesy of 16 members of Patrol Squadron (VP) 46 and Consolidated Maintenance Organization 10’s detachment there. The effort is part of a renovation project hosted by the Community Assistance Volunteer program and supported by the Navy Seabees of Camp Lemonier.

Sailors from Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island participated in the 25th annual “National Night Out” event held at Windjammer Park in downtown Oak Habor Aug. 5.
More than 3,000 local area residents attended National Night Out, an event which showcased several local government agencies including the police department, fire department, Navy and other public services to help raise awareness on the importance of crime fighting and to help further community relations.

Capt. Brad Russell, commander, Electronic Attack Wing U.S. Pacific Fleet, recognized the Electronic Attack community’s “Best of the Best” at the annual Electronic Attack Awards at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Aug. 7. Russell presented award winners with a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a plaque provided by Northrop Grumman and the Pratt and Whitney Corporation. Russell praised the entire Electronic Attack community for their continued professionalism during a period of continued high tempo tasking.

The Wizards of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133 recently concluded a productive two-week detachment to Nellis Air Force Base, in Las Vegas Nev. The event is the Air Forces premier training exercise that takes place on the 15,000-square mile Nevada Test and Training range, located north of Las Vegas.
While taking part in this exercise, the Wizards got the opportunity to train with multi-national forces on many levels. This included NATO forces based out of Germany, as well as Turkish, Brazilian, and even Swedish aviators.

Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 received a ësatisfactory with an outstandingí rating in 12 of the 13 points during the first Conventional Weapons Technical Proficiency Inspection (CWTPI) for a fleet EA-18G Growler, July 30. The inspection was conducted at Hangar 12 on board Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island and was the culmination of six weeks of preparation since the arrival of the first Growler, dubbed G-4, to NAS Whidbey Island, June 3.

It was a picture perfect day for Capt. Sterling Gilliam, commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, to take the Navy’s newest war fighting machine, the EA-18G Growler, for his final flight as leader of CVW-9.
Gilliam started his naval aviation career flying the EA-6B Prowler and was given the unique opportunity to fly the only EA-18G Growler at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, currently assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129.

Whidbey Island is not immune to earthquakes. On the heels of the Los Angeles magnitude 5.4 quake on July 29, the University of Washington reported a magnitude 3.0 earthquake July 30 at 10:30 p.m. near Port Townsend, Wa. The Nisqualy quake of Feb. 28, 2001 measured 6.8 and was the largest recorded quake in Washington state history. It shook Whidbey Island hard with some structural damage reported on base. Did you know Whidbey Island has a fault that runs through the south end of the island? No one knows when natural disasters will strike, but the key to saving people is preparedness and good communication.
