VAQ-139 was recently awarded the “Golden Wrench” award for 2004.
The award honors the superior maintenance practices of the Cougar maintainers that led to an outstanding sortie completion rate while deployed. Carrier Air Wing 14 has nine squadrons that were contenders for the award, eight of which operate aircraft produced in the last two decades.

Wizard aircrew helped make Prowler history on Oct. 21 when VAQ-133’s Aircraft 530 exceeded 10,000 flight hours.
Cmdr. Charles Gibson, Lt. Brian Johnson, Lt. Earl Demersseman and Lt.j.g. Jonathon Elrod crewed the EA-6B during a combat mission over Afghanistan in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom, logging the 2.8 flight hours that put the aircraft over the 10,000 hour mark.

Rear Adm. James W. Stevenson Jr., commander Carrier Strike Group 12, paid a visit to NAS Whidbey Island Nov. 5 to spend time with VAQ-137.
The Rooks kept Stevenson busy with various activities such as a low-altitude awareness flight through the Cascade Mountains and an evening social hosted at the home of Cmdr. Jeffrey Ruth, VAQ-137 commanding officer.

A memorial service was held at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Chapel on Nov. 18 to honor two members of Team Whidbey. AT2(AW) Andrew Lofton and AT3 Reuben Deken died of injuries suffered in an automobile accident south of Anacortes on Nov. 14. They were both serving with Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment Whidbey Island.

The VAQ-137 Rooks had a unique opportunity to participate in the weeklong Search and Rescue (SAR) Exercise run by the Whidbey Island SAR team.
Four Rooks survived overnight in the woods near Sedro-Wooley to test their survival skills. Taking part were Lt. Steven Shauberger, Lt. Travis Hartman, Lt. John Wilson and Lt. Erika Digel.which was a chance to use survival gear and apply their training.
