Surprise for Santa

The Canadian Detachment at the Naval Ocean Processing Facility Whidbey Island (NOPFWI) held its annual Christmas Dinner on Dec. 10. In keeping with Canadian naval tradition the youngest member, LS Jason Vellow became Commanding Officer for the day, while junior officers and senior sailors acted as servers at the Dinner.

Sailors enjoy mass quantities of turkey

The VQ-1 Officers’ wardroom and Chief Petty Officers’ mess held its annual Thanksgiving Day feast on Wednesday, Nov. 24. The feast was full of camaraderie and good fun for all. Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (AW) Guyla Vega and Senior Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (AW) Clara Gusenius organized the event and brought hundreds of World Watchers to the table. Ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce and turkey were among the tempting dishes. In all, over 32 turkeys and 28 hams were devoured by the thankful participants.

Praise keeps coming for base recycling effort

Navy Whidbey Recycle at NAS Whidbey Island received a national award for waste reduction today at the 2004 Keep America Beautiful National Awards ceremony. Keep America Beautiful President G. Raymond Empson presented the award in recognition of outstanding programs that minimize the impact of waste and promoted responsible waste handling during Keep America Beautiful’s 51st annual National Conference in Washington, D.C.

Survivors, Sailors remember Pearl Harbor

Sixty-three years ago America awakened to face the tragedy and shock of attacks on Pearl Harbor on a scale that would be inconceivable to many Americans today had it not been for the events that took place Sept. 11, 2001. The similarity of these two unprovoked attacks on American soil is a tie that binds the current generation of America’s service members to those who were present when hoardes of Japanese planes filled the Hawaiian skies to shatter the peace of a Sunday morning.

Gray Wolves take part in Keen Sword

VAQ-142, already in their second month aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, recently participated in Keen Sword 2004, a Large Force Exercise that took place throughout Japan and it’s surrounding waters. The bi-annual exercise involved the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps in conjunction with Japanese Defense Forces.

Lancers sling HARM downrange

Clear skies off the coast of Hawaii made it a perfect day for a HARM firing exercise. A Lancers’ Prowler, along with other participants from Carrier Air Wing Two (CVW-2), had the chance recently to hone their weapons skills. The objective was to successfully prepare one EA-6B Prowler to launch a High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile at a ship placed 100 miles off the Hawaiian coast, designated for sinking by the rest of the Air Wing later on.

ACME comes to rescue

ACME has long been associated with “Wile E Coyote’s” eternal pursuit of the Road Runner, but now they have come to CNATT Unit Whidbey Island. In support of CNATT Unit (formerly NAMTRAU) Whidbey’s long tradition producing the best trained Sailors and Marines for the fleet, they recently received a newly reworked EA-6B Flight Controls trainer from ACME World services.

Whidbey Wizards stay true to Navy blue

VAQ-133 held a ceremony to re-enlist 10 dedicated Sailors on Dec. 1. While deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, these Wizards took advantage of their tax-free status in a combat zone to maximize Selective Re-enlistment Bonuses (SRBs) for a combined total of $145,167.38.

CNATT Unit Whidbey Island brings home two trophies

Bringing home two trophies is not too bad for a flag football team that considered bowing out during the pre-season Captain’s Cup tournament. They looked sketchy at best in the beginning, with minimal participation at games and practices, as well as minor injuries plaguing the players that were consistently showing up to play.
