Carrier Air Wing Three commander flies with Zappers

The VAQ-130 Zappers had the honor of giving Commander, Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) Capt. James Cook his first flight in an EA-6B Prowler Nov. 14. The Whidbey weather was beautiful, which allowed the Zappers to fly the 1351D low-level route, which runs from Whidbey Island through eastern and southern Washington state. They executed a reactive suppression of enemy air defenses mission while on the route.

Family Advocacy educator teaches from experience

Dave Thomason, the Fleet and Family Support Program’s Family Advocacy Program (FAP) educator knows the reality of what his education could help prevent. Thomason, a retired master-at-arms master chief, was the NAS Whidbey Island’s chief of police for five years prior to moving into his current position. According to Thomason, he expected his first day at Whidbey in July 2000 to be made up of meeting and greeting and getting settled in. Instead, he was made aware of some bad news.

Catino settles in on new job

It’s been exactly four weeks since Jim Catino began his journey as the food and beverage manager at NAS Whidbey. In his new position, he oversees the operations of the CPO Club, Officers’ Club and catered events. Catino took over the position, formerly held by Judy Werner, eagerly anticipating building upon her management. Catino brings a wealth of experience, fresh ideas and most importantly, respect for the traditions on which the facilities were built.

Do I go to work when it snows?

It’s time to remember what to do when you wake up, realize it snowed overnight and wonder if you have to go to work today. Whidbey Island can get a light dusting or 10-plus inches, depending on where you live. It’s been known to snow here as early as mid-November and late as March. Your safety is important. Slipping and sliding on icy roads in the dark during blizzard conditions is the last thing any employer or your supervisor would ask.

Whidbey Island reservist assists in hurricane relief efforts

We have all seen images of the devastation that hurricanes Katrina and Rita left behind. Navy reservist Ensign Tamara Williams has seen it firsthand. Attached to Reserve Intelligence Area One, Williams, in civilian life, is a logistics officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and an American Red Cross disaster volunteer.

VQ-2 ombudsmen ready to serve

How many people know who the ombudsmen are in their commands today? Who knows what services their command ombudsmen can provide them? What does an ombudsman have to do with the squadron itself? At VQ-2 there are three genuine and dedicated ombudsmen who have volunteered to help meet the needs of the squadron family members. They are Kandice Dickover, Marcy Fundalewicz, and Melissa Wissel.

VQ-2 is back in Europe

Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two (VQ-2) is currently making its first Expeditionary Detachment from Whidbey Island to the European Theater. The U.S. European Command area of operations has previously gone without a significant VQ presence from Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10, and VQ-2 is happy to add that feather to an already multi-plumed hat.

Garudas praised for performance in Afghanistan

The Garudas of Electronic Attack Squadron 134 were awarded the Combat Action Ribbon Oct. 18 for their previous deployment to Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan from April 1 to Aug. 2, 2004. The award recognizes outstanding performance in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, providing electronic attack support to ground forces as part of the global war on terrorism.

Zappers, veterans celebrate together

The VAQ-130 Zappers had the honor of celebrating Veteran’s Day with veterans and military spouses who live at Regency Retirement Community in Oak Harbor. The luncheon was held in the dining room of the Whidbey chapter of Regency, and was attended by the officers of VAQ-130 and nearly sixty Regency residents. The celebration began with the pledge of allegiance, and was followed by a performance by the “Best Friends”, a musical troupe comprised of Ruthanna Metzgar, Nancy Strand, and Joan Lundquist. The trio sang a compilation of patriotic tunes with piano accompaniment.

Machinist’s mate joins VP-46 Grey Knights flight engineers

Patrol Squadron (VP) 46 recently added another member to the ranks of its qualified flight engineers (FE). On Tuesday, Nov. 8, Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Jason Woolsey passed his positional check flight allowing him the privilege of wearing the patch of an aircraft systems specialist for the P-3C Orion. What makes this a unique occasion is the fact that Woolsey is able to celebrate his achievement so close to home.
