When Aviation Structural Mechanic 1st Class(AW) Jerry Lego sat down for dinner Oct. 28 he did not anticipate that an otherwise mundane day would see him become a true hero.
While eating dinner in the Qatar chow hall, Lego noticed a woman choking and immediately sprung into action. He followed the choking patient protocol perfectly. First, he asked if the woman was “alright,” to which she shook her head side-to-side. Lego then asked if the lady could speak, to which she shook her head “no” again. Lego took swift and decisive action, telling the woman he was going to help. He calmly performed a model Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodged the obstruction- a piece of potato. After asking if the woman was okay, Lego simply went on with his business.

All systems are “go” for the Whidbey Patrol Squadron Memorial. After gaining approval from Oak Harbor’s Parks Board and City Council to locate the memorial in the city’s Veterans Park on Pioneer Way, the committee went to work raising necessary funds.
“We currently have obtained 90 percent of the money needed for project completion,” said committee chairman Cmdr.(ret) Don Hanson. “Hopefully, we’ll soon be over the top.”

The Wizards of VAQ-133 recently held their semi-annual service dress blues inspection and afterward, Commanding Officer, Cmdr. W.C. Minter presented several awards to some professional warriors.
Leading the way at the awards quarters were Personnel Specialist 2nd Class(AW) Theresa Brandes and Storekeeper 2nd Class(SW) Connie Smiglewski, who received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

On Monday, Nov. 7, four Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-135 Black Ravens jets flew over NAS Whidbey Island, marking an end to a six-month deployment aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) that began in May.
The following day all Black Ravens Sailors and remaining aircrew returned to Whidbey Island where friends and family welcomed the squadron with much excitement.

Following a two-week detachment to Al Asad Air Base, Iraq Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 141 returned to its normal home aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).
During the detachment the Shadowhawks proved their worth completing 37 sorties and 165 flight hours with two jets. The detachment was a difficult undertaking that split the squadron between ship and shore.
